No kidding. He is definitely hitting all of the right buttons (whether with his team, the fans, the alumni etc). He gets it and understands this game very well. He does his homework and has that same expectation from his players. What a nice change of pace at the helm. We are fortunate to have him and hopefully he sticks around long enough where we can see what he can do with time. Hard to not be impressed with everything he has done so far.
(01-06-2017 10:08 AM)DrachenFire Wrote: [ -> ]I'm guessing it's what I alluded to in my post. With just under a minute to go in the first half, Drexel grabbed a defensive board and CJ Bryce committed a foul. DU was in the bonus, and during the walk to the other end for the foul shot, Overton ended up jawing with the UNCW bench and needed to be physically taken away by his teammates. Obviously, Tyshawn said something because he and Bryce ended up getting T'd up. After Drexel returned to the bench area, an irate Spiker started yelling at the UNCW bench as he walked towards it and had to be brought back to the Drexel bench. After a couple of minutes sorting everything out, the refs brought Spiker and Keatts together in front of the scorer's table, Spiker said something to Keatts (looked like he was explaining what one of the DU players told him had caused the commotion) and they shook hands, went back to their benches and play resumed. I sit in the East Stands, so I couldn't overhear anything, perhaps somebody else (or Timer if he's floating around) could provide more details.

Or wait for the next podcast, as I'm sure it will be discussed.

Thanks for the explanation. I missed the game and hadn't seen your previous post before I put up the question. I had watched the Spiker postgame and was just a little surprised since he was so complimentary of them.
Watched the press conf. Continue to be impressed with Spiker. Quality person, very good coach.

One thing he made me think of... I know its still a long way off, but come CAA tourney time. Our conference could really benefit by "pulling an A-10". You know, how the favorite in the A-10 always seems to mysteriously lose in the Conf tourney and grab an at-large, so that another bubble team can win the tourney and steal a bid. (6 of the last 8 A10 tourneys were won by the 3 or 4 seed.)

Would love to see UNCW go into the CAA at about 26-5 but lose in the final to any other team. Dub gets an at large and the winner gets the auto bid, just like Spiker was grandstanding for.

Problem with that is we'd get snubbed and go to the NIT.

The sad thing is that you're probably right, even with the CAA ranked #11.
When they expanded the tournament to 68, they sold it as a way to help get mid-majors on the bubble into the tournament, but in reality, it was just as scam to make more room for the 9th and 10th place teams from power conferences.

I concur. Despite what they say, it has done nothing but put more money in the big boy's pockets.

Also - I watched the post game interview with your coach. It appears you guys have a classy guy as a coach and if given the chance he will bring you guys back to the top. Looks like a very good hire.

Damn you Bonnies!
Wow I as a little off on my prediction haha...
Regarding the Overton/Myles/bench/T situation, I missed most of the exchange at the game. I was watching Spiker and Major at the time and caught it out of the corner of my eye once things started to heat up. The speculation that we had at halftime was that someone from the UNCW bench made contact with Overton which is what escalated things.

From watching the video, Overton appears to approach a coach on the sideline, not a player. Spiker was REALLY cranked up as stated, as he was talking to the refs. The only words that I could make out was "BS" (not the abbreviation obviously) and the word "BENCH" so I'm wondering if he was cranked up that a UNCW coach had mouthed off at one of his players.

Overton has some fight to him. This is not his first "T" of the season, and not the first time I've seen him get a little fired up. Very interesting.

If anyone is interested in reading, here is the article on last night's game:

It sounds like something blown out of proportion and the refs and coaches sorted it out appropriately. There hasn't been any explanation given to UNCW fans either which leads me to believe it was something minor and during heated competition got out of hand briefly before being put to rest. Nothing happened the rest of the game leading me to further believe the players and coaches were over it. Why a fan would hold on to it is a little comical.
