Congrats to both teams. Looking forward to this series. Question, if the Cubs win, and they last won a World Series title in 1908, can Steve Bartman be welcomed back to Chicago?

Gonna be a great movie. I'll root for the Indians since they gave my Braves one.

Cubs fan all my life. Of the teams in root for cubs have the best fanbase. So committed no matter what. 2003 was my first year of college and just a brutal way to lose. I remember everything about that series. This year has been amazing. Cubs have the best team but it's baseball. I hope they finish it.

Love everything about Wrigley - hate the Cubs. Wrigley is a great party. Kind of like a concert where only half the audience gives a crap about what the music actually sounds like.

Although I admit a tiny vein of jealousy towards the massive number of non-Chicago based Cubs fans who glommed on to them attracted to the "lovable losers" concept. They clearly are able to both revel in the pain and the pathos and the wins. As a sports fan I find this both equally pathetic, reprehensible and appealing.

So here it is - the Cubs can't win the world series. Or more accurately, it MUST NOT happen.

I have long believed the Cubs always finding a way to be on the outside looking in was the just and proper punishment for their "lovable losers" fans. It is the karmic price to be paid for committing the cardinal, sports fan, perverse, indulgence - being able to enjoy wins and losses.

The cubs winning the World Series would be sure sign of end times. The destruction of order in the universe, the fall of civilization.

I hereby summon Ruth, Murphy, Loney, the glove of Leon Durham, the curse of the billy goat, black cats everywhere and the man formerly known as Bartman.

Go Tribe
I can't speak to the fanbase angle, but I can enjoy watching a World Series between two franchises that have neither won nor appeared frequently in the Series over the history of professional baseball. The World Series started in 1903 and the Cubs are appearing in their 11th Series. Their previous appearance was in 1945. The Indians are appearing in only their 6th Series (last won in 1948) and last played in 1997. This is better than watching the Spankees who have appeared in 40 or the Giants' 20 Series appearances. I love the World Series so I watch regardless of who is in but this matchup has more appeal to me other than the Reds playing in one. Besides, whoever wins there will be absolute pandemonium in either city.
Been a lifelong Indians fan, so hoping for them to end their long drought. Love that they are again being counted out, just like they have the first two series. Should be a great series. Go Tribe!
Congrats, Mark!

Great series.

Went to Mug Night at RPs to watch game 7 last night. Cubs fans were out in force. What an amazing game, series and season. I didn't think UC v. Pitt from 2009 could be topped, but this was awesome. And I didn't even feel too bad at Court this morning, probably adrenaline preventing a hangover.
Congrats to Cubs fans. Harry Caray is smiling down from heaven today.

On a related note, I was discussing the WS with a couple guys at the gym this morning. I lamented about the fact Cincinnati is still waiting for its winner. One of the guys piped up.. "Well, we got Ohio State". I educated him on the fact that Ohio State is located two hours away in Columbus. It is the equivalent of us claiming victory for the Colts SB win a few years ago. I meant Cincinnati's winner-- Bengals, Reds, UC and now I guess FC Cincinnati (who probably has the quickest path to a championship when they go MLS in a few years).
Chapman's garage was the real winner last night, could have been ugly.

I can't get over how many Cubs fans were in Cleveland's stadium for Game 7. When that first homerun went out of the park, it sounded like the Cubs were playing at home.

How does that even happen? Don't Cleveland season ticket holders get first dibs on tickets?

And why does *anyone* care if Bill Murray is in attendance?

I was kind of on the fence about who I wanted to win, but after thinking about GABP half-full with Cubs fans and thinking how much I don't like that, I made the difficult decision to pull for Cleveland.

The Cubs were meant to lose. That's their charm. Winning the World Series destroyed that. The result is that their enormous fan base will become enormously obnoxious. Some think they already are.

Cleveland’s season ticket sales was atrocious this year so there were seats available on the market. Like them or not, the Cubs have a huge fan following (thanks in part to WGN) and one can drive from Chicago to Cleveland in about 5 and half hours.

I agree the whole Bill Murray thing is nauseating. I'm tired of looking at his face to be honest and I enjoyed Caddyshack and Stripes.

I find it amazing that the home fans didn't snatch up every single ticket. Yeah, I know there are a lot of Cubs fans, but when your team hasn't won the World Series since 1948, you'd think the excitement would have made this game a very difficult ticket to find outside of Cleveland.

They were talking about how the Cubs fans were so adament on going that the average ticket price on Stub Hub was over $5,000 per seat. They talked about a couple fans that had paid $15,000 per seat to sit behind the Cubs dugout. Let's face it, the ticket brokers pretty much get all the non-season ticket seats anymore and even season tick holders get offered insane money to sell. It was probably 25% Cubs fans as it was clearly louder for the Indians, but the Cubs impressed with how many there were and how loud. But they paid a pretty penny for those seats.
Speaking of Steve Bartman, his lawyer said...

Quote:A man serving as a spokesman for Steve Bartman says the infamous Chicago Cubs fan did not express relief after the team beat the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 to win the World Series when he spoke to Bartman on the phone.

“He was just overjoyed that the Cubs won, as all the Cubs fans are,’’ Frank Murtha, a lawyer who has served as Bartman’s spokesman, told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday.

But Bartman, blamed for contributing to the Cubs’ 108-year drought since their last World Series title after he interfered with a foul ball during the 2003 National League Championship Series — when the Cubs failed again to reach the World Series — isn’t about to make any public appearances.

“We don’t intend to crash the parade,’’ Murtha said. “The one thing that Steve and I did talk about was if the Cubs were to win, he did not want to be a distraction to the accomplishments of the players and the organization.’’

Bartman has not granted any interviews since the 2003 incident but has continued to live and work in the Chicago area, Murtha said.
