Would someone on this board with connections please talk with Coach Candle about having at least one or two spies on punts the rest of the season. We have been burned in consecutive weeks. Both times changed momentum and could have potentially cost us wins. If we play fundamentally sound, we likely beat BG by 14 or 21 instead of 7. Ps- I think we need to start preparing for QB zone reads. NIU is on the horizon. Running QBs have been our achilles heal. Cooper Rush running fo a score today made me cringe. Go Rockets!

Cooper Rush didn't just run for a score--he broke 3 or 4 tackles for about 15 yards and then bulled his way into the end zone from the 3 yard line--ran right through 2 Rockets. He is CMU's offense right now.
Yeah, he should have been dropped upon initial contact. Weak effort by the two guys who were right there. OR--maybe they were afraid that if they tackled a QB they would be flagged for targeting and ejected.

After watching the replay last night I see that there was actually only one guy there in position to make initial contact and things were happening so rapidly his momentum kept him from being able to really to do anything.

Very good point.

Man that was a horrible call. Embarrassing, really. Not necessarily proud of it but I was among the crowd who booed those officials for the rest of the game. The group last week wasn't much better. I'm sure now it will cost Toledo down the road. And I'm just st as sure the conference won't address the bad call. Just glad that bad call didn't figure into the final result.
Hey man, I was one of the last to stop booing. They were worthy.

At that time I was on the west side, south end and there was one particular personality on the sideline--whose name you would know, but I won't mention because I don't want to get him in trouble--who was lifting his arms up in the air trying to keep it going, LOL! And it was working!
I always have been told and I repeat it constantly,

"Special teams will win or lose you 2 to 3 games a year!!!!"

So far Toledo has been lucky to survive the blunders so far.

Vest needs to figure out the FG kicking. He has the leg. It's the direction he needs to work on.

The touchback on the punt was awful.....03-hissyfit Kick it to the corner!!!!!!!!

Please have the DE's stay home and watch the punter!!!!!!03-weeping

Catch the ball on punt return.........

I will say the kickoff coverage has been good so far....... 03-cloud9

Don't forget to mention you are calling in behalf of The Internet D. 03-wink
You cant punt to the corners everytime... you punt where the coverage will make a play. A 15 mph wind at Ellis' back took that ball to the one inch line of the endzone. Unlucky, but not a bad play. In the end we should have gone for the long 4th down because even if we were stopped short CMU would have gotten the ball around the 20. Hindsight is 20-20. We trust Ellis and he has been pretty darn good. I remember 3 punts that trickled down to the endzone and it was our cover guys not making the plays to keep the ball out.

It was a short field and Ellis has a big leg. The geometry of the angled kick would allow for a better chance to down the punt inside the 10 yard line. besides there was only one man back to return the kick, thus allowing an even better chance to down inside the 10.

And the punt landed just in the endzone and popped almost straight up in the air. My point is the ball was 1 yard or less off. It doesnt mean it was the wrong place to kick it placement wize between the hashes...Just a missed chance at execution. Kicking it left or right could also bounce out of the endzone. It could also out kick the coverage and let a return happen. Just got to much of the kick or missjudged the wind at that precise moment. Not a big deal.
Field goal is at least a three player effort, not to mention coaching and instruction. Off snaps, off holds or off kicks or any combination. Might not be a one person fixable. Important to id the cause, not look for scape goats.

I believe most of Vest field goal kicks have been well to the right of center.

The punt coverage in the last two games have included to defenders on either side of the punter - lessons learned.
I think Ellis has been the best special teams player so far this season. He's 3rd in the MAC in punting, behind the BG punter who is getting talked up for all-american honors and another really good one at EMU. (Of course the BG punter is getting a lot more in-game practice this season.) More than 1/4 of Ellis' kicks have been inside the 20, and he has 7 50+ yarders. Only 8 kicks have been returned out of 27.

Not too many other bright spots on special teams. Kickoff returns have been terrible, for example.
