TU has now been to 20 total bowls over its FB history. Here is a list of BCS/P5 teams that have been to 20 or less bowls in their history.

SEC
Kentucky - 15
Vanderbilt - 7
So Carolina - 20

Big10
Indiana - 10
Rutgers - 10
Northwestern - 12
Minnesota - 18
Illinois - 18
Purdue - 17

Pac12
Washington St - 12
Oregon St - 17
Utah - 19
Arizona - 20

Big12
K-State - 19
Iowa St - 12
Kansas - 12

ACC
Louisville - 20
Wake Forest - 10
Duke - 12
Virginia - 18

Independent
Army - 5

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G5 Programs who have been to 20 or more bowls (excluding AAC)

MWC
Air Force - 25
Fresno St - 23
(Boise St has been to 16 Bowls)

CUSA
So Miss - 21

SBC
None

MAC
None
There has been some talk about which of the G5 is the strongest and most of us assume its the AAC, but there is also a case to be made for the MWC, mainly because of bowl history. But certainly there is no argument about these two being the strongest kids on the block they reside. And of course we have to be the stronger MBB and WBB league - no argument there.

Here is a little about a lot about the G5.

Total Bowls
MWC - 162
AAC - 155
MAC - 88
CUSA - 86
Sunbelt - 25

Divisional Breakdown - AAC vs MWC
AAC West - 99
AAC East - 56

MWC (mountain) - 89
MWC (west) - 73

So as you can see here, the AAC west seems to be the strongest G5 division (with 99 total bowls) and those 6 teams in that division have a stronger bowl history than the entire 12 team MAC conference, 12 team CUSA and 11 team Sunbelt Conference. So TU is obviously in the strongest G5 division - historically - a very good place to be.

Also there is a close relationship of the MWC with several bowls out west that fast track them to a "local" bowl. Not so much with the AAC. If that were the case, Memphis would be going to the Liberty Bowl a lot.
Here is a breakdown of our 2016 schedule and their D-I bowl history (number).

Team --------------------Bowls
San Jose St----------------10*
Ohio St---------------------47
NCAT------------------------0* (D-IAA)
Fresno St-------------------23
SMU-------------------------15*
Houston---------------------24
Tulane-----------------------11*
Memphis----------------------8
ECU--------------------------15*
Navy-------------------------21
UCF---------------------------7
Cincinnati--------------------16*

Since it appears the AAC and MWC are the top dogs by a long shot among the G5, a closer look at their regular season success is also revealing. Excluding bowls, the league strength can be gauged fairly evenly because bowls tend to include a political element as well as geography and history of the program. So excluding that, lets look at the leagues from top to bottom and their won/loss last year.

AAC - RS Wins
Houston - 12
Navy - 10
Memphis - 8
Tulsa - 6
SMU - 2
Tulane - 3
Cincy - 7
USF - 8
Temple - 10
UCONN - 6
ECU - 5
UCF - 0

Total - 77

Average RS wins per team - 6.42

----------------------------------------------------------

MWC - Reg Season Wins

BSU - 8
AF - 7
USU - 6
NM - 6
CSU - 6
Wyoming - 2
SDSU - 11
Nevada - 6
SJSU - 5
UNLV - 3
Fresno St - 3
Hawaii - 3

Total - 66

Average RS wins per team - 5.5

Observation - the average AAC team, looking at this breakdown, would be bowl bound where the MWC would not. And of course this figure includes the winless UCF squad from last year. BTW SJS went to a bowl (Cure Bowl) last year with only 5 wins, thus allowing the MWC an additional bowl game they normally wouldn't get.

BTW - TU has been to two Liberty Bowls - In 2005 beating Fresno St and 2012 defeating Iowa St. Memphis has never been to the post season Liberty Bowl.
