Being reported that Illinois 2016 early enrollee Eli Peters is transferring to UT, before ever playing a down there. 3star out of Sandalwood HS in Jacksonville. Was recruited by Beckman, and apparently not seen to be a fit in Lovie Smith's plans.

So if nothing changes, by my count the Rockets will have at least 7 QBs on the roster in 2017, including '17 recruit Caleb Martin.

Jeff George Jr., now there's a problematic name out of history.

A pro-style QB that doesn't fit in with a pro-coach? Eh, why's Lovie looking for duel threat?

As for our new player, I'm sure the kid can count. QBs are good athletes and have a good field knowledge, know all positions. He must like his chances. Not sure why Coach Candle wanted another QB though.

Well, the best one will emerge - so the competition is good. One may become the punter and others may drop off the grid and transfer if they don't see playing time. It's the reality of D-I athletics and if guys aren't showing they can lead the team, then someone else gets a shot. Downside is the reputation it could create and tying up some scholarships. Then you get down to not offering to renew a scholarship and things can get ugly with recruiting and dealing with their former HS coaches and everyone else he has bad-mouthed you to other coaches.
2016 QB's on schollie at UT:

Woodside RS Jr
Julian Jr
Gibson RS soph
Guadagni RS fresh
Martin FR (2017)
Peters FR (ineligible)

Walk-ons:

Jalen Reese

I like the mix and I do not think we have too many QB's on hand. Peters is an excellent move by UT. He will have 4 years of eligibility and he could be a difference maker at Toledo

Correct Detroit! I knew I forgot someone

add Julian RS Jr

I think QB is critical and UT wants some choices/options going forward. I GET IT!

UT will have a LOT of talent available at QB. It's all good. the best will emerge

You can't have enough good QB's (football players) on your roster!!!!!!!

Remember the melt down Julian had at NIU after Ely and Woodside went down two seasons ago???? Toledo had to turn to Macon during that game (and he played great).....

NIU had to use a walk-on Freshman QB against OU and in the MACC because of injuries.

Julian left with a concussion early in the game. When he's gotten reps, he's looked good ever since.
UT recruited Peters hard last year and evidently Candle's determination/connection has paid off with Peter's reversal!!! Kudos to Candle for keeping the lines of communication open.

Go Rockets!

I think your characterization of Julian was unfair. Of course we would've benefitted from more depth at the position at that time.
Julian looked really sharp as a soph in spot duty. has all the tools, just needs to show he can put it together. gipson might be the odd man out, but who knows. guadagni has looked good but proven nothing yet. I don't mind a bit of a logjam. if a guy is slipping down the depth chart he can transfer to an FCS school without losing a year and perhaps start right away. football with the 1A 1AA split is more forgiving to transfers. there is a bit of a risk overstocking a position group and pissing off a recruit and maybe by extension a high school coach, but with QBs take the risk. Don't want to be stuck short at that position and a high talent young guy who decides he wants to leave the big 10 and be in your program is worth it, imo

looking at the highlights, his release point is low but the ball comes out quick and has zip. i like quarterbacks whose time between deciding to make a throw and putting it on the hands is fast.

I read it the same way as you the first time, had my snarky response posted about the inconsistencies in what Terry posted. "Melt down" was certainly unfair. But then looking at it again, whether intended or not I see the sense of the rest. In that game, we ran out of designated QBs but because we had recruited more than we needed, had one of them at another position who was able to finish the game at QB.
Maybe you will have 8 QBs. you are trying to poach QB NIU COMMIT Rodney Hall from Cass Tech in Michigan. Not a very classy move by your new coach. Coaches Carey and Campbell never went after each others commits in the past, I wonder what NIU will think about this. I guess this is the new Candle strategy. Good luck to you guys in the non- MAC part of your games!
I believe our new GA Mr. Wilcher has a positive relationship at that Michigan school.
I just checked on Rivals and you have 235 offers out ...NIU has 52. I guess Candle likes the "blanket strategy" as opposed to selective. It looks like a different world under Candle. I hope it works out .
