The character Reggie Dunlop was inspired by Brophy.
When the Birmingham Bulls were here in the early 80's people used to claim the movie was based on the Bulls. Not true but it must have been the result of Brophy being the coach and several of the players who played in the move also playing for the Bulls during that era.
if any of you are fans of the movie the team they were based on the Johnstown Jets. The brother of the screenwriter who wrote the movie played for the Jets. When he told her about the team was going to be closed down she moved to Johnstown and wrote the movie. When a new team took its place the owner of the defunct Jets would not let them use the name so the fans voted to use the Chiefs name from the movie. The Johnstown Chiefs moved to a southern city twenty some years later just like the rumored southern move of the Charlestown Chiefs in the movie.
