With all of Birmingham's momentum the last few years could this turn off the spigot? Could a collapse in local projects and enthusiasm impact UAB sports?
Might want to crank up the social media machine

One man should not have the power to put a stop to legislation that has 32 of the 35 senators cosigning it.

Marsh says:
"I am not convinced the credits are advantageous to the state," Marsh said. "I want to make sure we are creating a program that (doesn't just benefit) large corporations and big developers."

And then:
"My wife and I just finished restoring a hotel in Anniston and it was a costly project," he said. "I didn't take any credits and it's a structure worth saving and we did it. I believe there are people out there who will take on these projects and yes, they will take the tax credits if they can get it. Who wouldn't? But I don't think they are necessary for preservation."

Sounds like he wants the tax credits to apply to the hotel he got for free... Besides, there is a great deal of difference in spending a hundred thousand dollars on something you got for free when compared to a multi-million dollar investment for property that a developer paid millions for to start with.
Del Marsh is proving he's at functional idiot level. I hope that moron gets primaried next election and loses bad enough that he's never heard from again.

+1
Someone ask Del about his chrome plating business & and all the groundwater contamination clean up that was done. Maybe he needs a tax credit for that
It is Del Marsh who is asking that teacher tenure qualification be extended from 3 years probation to 5 years probation, and that teacher pay raises be tied to test scores which would favor the teachers in affluent suburban districts where the scores are always highest. He has dropped his plan for a state lottery or other gaming. He is also President pro temp of the state Senate.

Just remember that he won renomination for the November election by over 70% in the primary vote.
So channel your indignation and call and e-mail Marsh's office tomorrow morning.
BBJ: Five reasons Marsh must reverse course on the historic renovation tax credit

Unbelievable. For the first time since the Civil Rights Era Bham's population has shown a gain (albeit like 10 people). The key to revitalization is to bring in more outside influences. If it's us vs the Bammerist establishment...
Aside from the corruption, this is something central to the heart of Alabama politics in general. Instead of addressing real problems, they end up messing with something that's actually working. I expect him to dig his heels in for a while, find that he can't defend his position (especially when we're positioned to see a return of $3.90 for every $1.00), and, eventually backtrack but not without throwing in some sentiments about fighting for the people and all that.

He actually had the audacity to cite an example of him doing a project without the credit all the while glossing over the fact that he got the place for free, too.

Either way, I don't think this isn't a real threat as much as it is a sad reminder that this is the reality of Alabama politics.
The threat is that there are only four or five days left in the legislative session. If something is not done, and damn quickly, this program will go away.

Get on the phone and raise hell with him and your own Senator.
I know many of you poke fun at BBF for his imperial Jefferson, seat certificates etc excursions, but I really think this is the latest in a long history of anti-urban, anti-Birmingham/Jeffco actions. I know I'm paranoid, but it wouldn't surprise me to find the Bryant/Espy, St John cabal behind this, using the Bently mess as a distraction. "Look, it's Hailey's comet!!"

Even paranoids have enemies. Marsh is a Colonial Bank director, which ties him in to the Auburn version of the cabal, who we've seen are tied to the Bryant Bank cabal via Hubbard, the Yellowood idiot and Espy/McGregor.

On the other hand, the racist/racist-lite hatred of Birmingham is very real, and he could just be freelancing. The Anniston legislators have screwed Birmingham before, like scuttling the pre-Olympic high speed rail to Atlanta in the early 90's.
Del Marsh is a special kind of stupid.
He now says he's open to a one year extension. Sounds like the beatings are working
It was a threat to show his power. I'll be surprised if there is not a change at some point making the tax credits apply to some smaller scale projects such as his free hotel...

Keep in mind that the Governor's job will be up for grabs in a couple of years, not to mention U.S. Senator Shelby's seat may be open if he retires at 87. Del Marsh may have greater ambitions than President pro temp of the state Senate.
He sees no tangible benefit yet we had a near record year for capital investment and added 2000 new construction jobs since the the thing was passed.
