Sam, from Fat Sam's Sandwich Shop on 11th Ave., was in a pretty serious traffic accident last week. He's going to be ok, but he has some broken bones and is still in the hospital at UAB. I figured some of you who have frequented his place over the years might like to know. There aren't many local merchants who are more outspoken in their support of Blazer athletics than Sam.
Very sorry to hear that. Great guy and great food. Hope he feels better. Thanks for letting us know.
Get well soon Sam !
Thanks for letting us know. Can you give updates if you hear anything about how he's doing?
Yea keep us updated.
I was thinking of going & getting a FS this week for dinner.
Dragon's Belly, Kitchen Sink, Son of Italian... fond memories of his grub. Praying for a swift & full recovery for Sam.
Prayers for Sam! Man theres some memories, love Fat Sams
I'm glad he's going to be ok. I've spent a lot of time in there just talking UAB sports while my food was being made. He's a really good guy.
Apparently, it was worse than I realized. His car rolled several times. He has been in ICU for several days and probably will be hospitalized for several more. He is expected to recover, but I imagine that could be a long process. I hear the restaurant is open, so if you're in town you could stop by to get a more detailed update along with a Dragon Belly.

The news hasn't been good so far. Alan Eberhardt from the School of Engineering has set up a site to help cover hospital expenses for anyone who is in a position to contribute.

Hope he recovers soon.. Not to be negative, but is it looking like he's going to survive this?
I don't think any of his injuries were life threatening, but he wasn't in great health before the accident. Now his body is having a hard time healing. I don't know if anyone can answer your question directly, but I think even the best-case scenario is that he is going to have a long hard road ahead of him.

Quote:Now, the UAB community is returning the favor and rallying to support Shatara, who has been in the trauma intensive care unit at UAB Hospital since suffering major injuries in a car wreck three weeks ago, on April 8...

Shatara's medical bills continue to mount, and while the family does have insurance, out-of-pocket expenses have so far topped $30,000 and keep growing every day he's hospitalized.

To defray some of those expenses, Shatara's family and friends have set up the Fat Sam Recovery Fund on the emergency fundraising website Generosity.com. The fund has raised a little more than $8,000 -- or 16 percent of its $50,000 goal -- in its first 11 days.

This funding effort is written up in the Sunday B'ham NEWS (today) front page.
The requests for prayers coming from the UAB Football Facebook page... don't sound optimistic... A sad outcome if so and I hope we keep coming back to the family for their sandwiches. I'm kicking myself for not getting another Dragon's Belly and talking to Sam again last time I was in the 'Ham. I missed his place and I miss bantering about football with him.
Sam passed away tonight. :(

Thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.
