I have a question for those that understand the RPI formula. I was perusing the resumes of mid major teams that have high RPIs and I came across South Dakota St. who has an RPI of 29 according to RPI Forcecast. They were 0-1 vs the Top 50. 3-1 vs 50-100 and had 5 losses to teams 100 and above, including a loss to 286 UMKC. How does a resume like that yield a top 30 RPI?

RPI = (your Win % * 0.25) + (Opponent Win % * 0.50) + (Opponent Opp Win % * 0.25)
Only 2 losses to 150+ RPI
0 home losses, which count as 1.4 losses
0 games against 300+ rpi
only losses were on the road, which count as .6 of a loss each.
Just have to play better competition. Don't necessarily have to beat all of them. Our conference mates did us no favors either.

Trade some of our home wins against Seattle, USC-Upstate and Jax State and have three road games against top 75 RPI teams and our RPI would be better. Win a game or two against that competition and our RPI is even better.
Conversely UAB

16 games against rpi 200+ (6 in non conference)
6 games against RPI 300+
Average rpi of Non Conf Opponents (205)
Also... We have tried to keep money in state... but our instate basketball teams might need to improve before we schedule them.

I have question for the NCAA selection committee. Could UAB have finished 33 and 1 with only loss in the C-USA championship game and still not receive a bid? The committee would have stressed poor SOS and lack of wins versus top 50.

We would have made the field. We would have a win over Iowa St. Still would have been a 12 or 13 seed though.

No way that would've happened. When on our 14 game win streak, we were predicted as a 13 or 12 seed, on the way up. Then had 3 more bad losses
South Carolina goes 15-0 in non Conf games.
9-7 in SEC.
24-8 after loss in first game of SEC tourney.
No bid for them.
That is tough.
Best out of conf wins at Clemson and vs Memphis.
...and Tulsa, which everyone had as a tournament lock. 05-stirthepot

Heck, sombody from the SEC had to show up with a big bag o cash for them to add Vandy at the last second. I'll bet the committee finished up about 3:45 and then somebody piped up and said " I never thought we'd stoop to screwing the SEC with just 2 teams. That's what they get for being mediocre".

Had to keep the new American Athletic from being a one-bid league.
Saw on the CUSA board. There are 32 conferences. Only 9 conferences received mutliple bids. 9 out of 32.

and the only true mid major team to receive an at large was Wichita State, which we all know is a power team residing in a mid major conference.
