So this new football league is starting this spring and has a 2 year contract for games to be televised on ASN. I would guess its just a matter of time before they announce a team somewhere in Hampton Roads. My guess would be where the Destroyers played. Anyone have any ideas if they are coming? Would it affect ODU in any way? I sort of doubt it. Different seasons, and these semi-pro things never go well.

Saw they have put in for copyrights to team names in about 8 locales, none of which are in or close to Virginia.

Presently, the only way this effects ODU is by giving our athletes another avenue to play professionally.
Im surprised. Usually these start up leagues jump all over this area. I thought the XFL would have been huge if they had played at NSU.
Something from last year.

I'm personally hoping it still happens, would be cool to have some football in the spring to watch.
Also, if the Denver Post is to be believed, Norfolk has already sent a letter of intent to be one of the host cities. (Dated Oct 15 2015).

Also Orlando's Business Observer (dated 02/11/2016)

Well, they've already taken care of one prerequisite for minor league pro football: a team in Birmingham.
Although, this article actually gives out team names, which seems to contradict that.

Team names include: Alabama Airborn, Arkansas Attack, Florida Fusion, Northwest Empire, Ohio Union, Oklahoma Nation, Texas Independence, and Utah Stand

Here's the league's press release about targeting Norfolk. They'd play at NSU: http://www.mlfbmedia.com/major-league-fo...franchise/

EDIT: It's a year old, so who knows?
http://www.yourobserver.com/article/mlfb...g-position

This article mentions the intent to expand to 12 in 2017. Maybe Norfolk is one of these expansion candidates, or maybe Norfolk is one of the first 8 and one of these other teams mentioned is a 2017 candidate.

All I know is that this has been a very productive how ever long I've researched it.

I thought this thing had died. Heard about it some time ago and nothing.

Speaking of minor-league sports in Hampton Roads that may or may not happen, what happened with the Virginia Beach Neptunes? Last I heard, they were going to start play in the Atlantic League this year, but they're not on the league's website, their Facebook page has been quiet since November, the last update to their website was the announcement of naming rights to their stadium in April, and the last mention of the Neptunes by the Pilot appears to be a story about "modest" proposed changes to the lease with an eye to opening in 2017.

Are they still planning to break ground in April? Is this still going to be a thing?

I figure this is just going to fizzle out.

I did have hopes that the A-11 league was going to turn into something and hopefully make its way here.

They had bought the rights to the USFL team names. All of the proposed logos/ uniforms looked sharp. Unlike anything the UFL had.

My favorite :)

I haven't heard anything about a team coming here for any league since last year. You would figure that if this thing was serious, there would be a marketing plan going on. So many leagues have tried and failed to get some grounding. IMO they are all trying to become a farm league for the NFL, and are selling themselves short in the process.

Will they be able to compete with the NFL? I doubt it. They should try and market themselves as something different. The Arena leagues have been doing fairly well for themselves. Not amazing, but they have lasted a hell of a lot longer than anything else.
