The basis for the movie "Mars Attacks!"

Truly one of the strangest things I ever watched

I would have loved to been alive to see it.
My dad was the marketing 'genius' behind the promo. He had few regrets in his life, but that wasn't one of his better marketing/sales ideas. Lol

That's fantastic. I bet he has some killer stories.

That was right up there with the "disco sucks" promotion for the white sox :)
I was there for this game. One correction though. Pretty sure it was a day game starting at around 11am for TV. The student bus left Birmingham around 5am. I did not get pelted with candy though because my seats were at the top of the arena.

The wars between Clarence Martin and Jerome Mincy were epic, the stuff 30 for 30s are made of. Martin broke Mincy's nose in one game and threw Mitchell to the floor like a rag doll in another game, almost starting a bench clearing brawl.

Basketball was a much rougher sport in the 80's and UAB Western Kentucky embodied it.

The sweetest tournament victory was in 87 after Mitchell and Mincy were gone. UAB was not as good and was not hosting the conference tournament for a change. WKU was the best team by far that year and hosting. UAB went to Diddle as a 5th seed or something, won 3 straight to win the tournament on WKU court, get the Auto bid and keep the NCAA streak alive.

I also remember another game I went to at Diddle where it had snowed hard during the game. When the game was over, came out to a beautiful campus covered in new fallen snow. It was beautiful.

Always loved that series.
Candy bar promotions were pretty common then. At UAB's first game in 78, they gave away a new candy bar just introduced into the market. It was called the Twix bar.
Btw, in the video linked in the article, #44 for UAB is the recently deceased Jack Gordon. RIP Big Jack.

I looked and looked for the tip time. Thanks for the clarification.
The UAB Blazer Band made the trip for this game as well. Good times.

Student buses and the Blazer band on the road. What a time.
Ha! I wrote that Mincy was a guard. Ooops.
