Full Version: Why do we struggle so much at the EMU Convocation Center?

Today's WBB game got me thinking of other games in that arena over the past couple of years. For example, two years ago our MBB team had a much better record than theirs going into our game there, but we got blown out 65-44. Last year, our records were very similar but they blew us out even worse, 85-59. And then of course there was today, where even though they may be better than us, they probably aren't 18 points better. However, my post is mostly about MBB. I know we can beat them because we're 4-0 against them the last two seasons in Toledo and Cleveland. Why, then, do we play so terrible against them and get blown out in Ypsilanti?
All their thousands of (nonexistent) fans really must get to our players' heads.
I don't know what's going on with Coach Cullop and Coach K, but our basketball programs are severely underachieving (given all the circumstances). How is a program like EMU blowing us out by 20 points?

EMU has better athletes and better coaching.
I am very frustrated by this as well. It seems like their WBB team has beaten us home and away the last few years (not to mention in Cleveland last year). Cullop has had plenty of time to see Eastern's zone defense, but her teams continue not to be able to execute against it. I would think that EMU's defense is just that good except that other MAC teams beat them, which makes me wonder why we can't. I am really tired of our women's team being average. This is year three with no relief in sight, as we have two starters including our best player graduating this year.
EMU's coaches take great pride in protecting their homecourt - something I wish still happened here.

We smoked them there last year, IIRC.

I see I am not the only one whose memory often fails them. 03-wink In 2013-2014 the Rockets swept EMU at Savage and at Ypsi. Last year EMU won at Savage and UT returned the favor at Ypsi; however, last year it was EMU that knocked UT out of the MAC Tourney at Cleveland. Coach Cullop is 0-3 against in EMU having NEVER beaten EMU in Cleveland in the MAC Tourney.

If it is any consolation at least this game (today) UT held Cha Sweeney (Toledo-Rogers) under 20 points which they were not able to do in any of the 3 games last year.

That sentence was referring to the men's team, not the women's team.

My apologies---I just return from the women's game in Ypsi and had them on my mind.

No problem.
I felt the balls they use. They're way more padded than the Nike balls (EMU uses adidas). They make virtually no sound when bounced and bounce farther than normal Nike balls IMO. Each shot bounced around a ton. Just feeling it was odd. Thats my excuse. Why isnt NCAA one single mandated ball? The convo is also a different backdrop than some other places. Millett and EMU's convo stick out as bad shooting gyms for Toledo teams.

Sure didn't have any shooting issues at Millet this year.
