The Blade needs a new picture of Coach Kampe IMHO...that one looks like a mug shot from the Oakland County Jail. 04-jawdrop
I firmly believe that if Kampe was hired back in the day, instead of Larry Gibson, he would still be on the sideline at Savage, and we would probably see a number of MAC banners hanging from the rafters... He has done a lot more with less up at Oakland...

Never a truer statement... that was a program changing mistake, I remember wondering why he was passed over for Gipson.

Gipson had enormous success in JC and heavily recruited the Toledo area. That didn't translate to D1 but I was initially excited by the hire. Not sure that anyone short of Kampe foresaw his success.

Kampe has had success at Oakland, a job that doesn't pay very well. But he's had no other job offers. The reason is because he has a reputation within the coaching fraternity as being a real jerk.

Strange that Gipson was wildly successful at the small college level both BEFORE and AFTER his stint at Toledo, but while here he struggled to play .500 ball.

If I recall correctly, at one time he was also the Athletic Director & Men's BB coach at Oakland.
2 jobs = 2 salaries.....
Well Oakland is playing MSU in that tiny auditorium of an arena next week - same night as the Boca Raton bowl. The capacity for that arena is listed as 2,000 - and yet they get the #1 team in the country to come play there. They also played MSU the night they opened that arena.

I went there last year to see them play Toledo (the game I walked out of with 10 minutes left because I just couldn't stand it any longer) and it is a nice venue to watch a game in. You feel like you are sitting on the bench - because you practically are...

Nope. They're playing them at the Palace, which is like 5 minutes away.

Izzo has never feared traveling to small schools with good teams.
Jerk, cocky...all the other things you can say but...confident in his own skin, knows his system and it works and as he so proudly stated...graduated all but 3 kids in 27+ years. He is a good coach and a good person as well.

It counts as an Oakland home game but it's at the Palace. Just like UT v OSU football in Cleveland.
Main thing I remember about him was his running into a game against UT without checking in. Toledo was down by a point or so and fifty of us are screaming at the ref that BG had six guys on the floor. Two possession changes take place and Kampe sidles off the floor to the bench on a trip up court. Nobody ever caught it apart from the 3,000 fans. Toledo lost by one or two points.
He isnt a jerk, just a hard coaching, hard charging SOB.... who doesnt care about what people think.... and like all the greats he isnt afraid to push players to their limits.... he is the type of guy who can get on kids and they don't mind.

Word around UT when Kampe was on staff, you needed to watch your back around the guy. My sources were pretty good.

An anonymous source (you) who didn't know Kampe giving the opinion of second-hand anonymous sources from over 30 years ago. I guess that I'm not going to judge the guy as a human being based on this. We can all judge him as a coach, though, and there's no question that he has been successful. I guess they're happy with him at Oakland since they've stuck with him as the level of the program has risen.

People that knew Kampe. I was told that 30 years ago, I knew UT Coaches, players, Athletic Department staff, etc. Even had ties to Head Coach Mitchell at Oakland U whom I knew from UC Basketball. Talked to him before Oakland's first game @UT. Very close to UC, Vandy, and Toledo Bball programs. Kampe not as successful once Oakland got in the Horizon.

Fair enough, its remarkable how he beats us and others with what seems to be a community college.
