Nothing personal against him, but Alonzo Russell. 2 STUPID plays.
1) Trying to field the punt before halftime. Bonehead play. Complete bonehead play. Instead of going in to half up 3 (possibly 6 or 10), we go in down 4.
2) The targeting play. Completely away from the play. Absolutely ZERO need to hit that guy. There was no way in hell he was going to make the tackle. Instead of a 1st down inside the 20, we end up punting the ball away.

You are correct sir.
1) Basicially a 14 point swing
2) 7 point and momentum loss.
Not real happy about the 2nd half opening kick off either.
As they say, you are only as strong as your weakest link,
Until the targeting penalty I had some faith we would still win the 2nd half and go play for a championship
That didn't seal it, but it made it so so much harder.
Also didn't like going for it on 4th with so much time left in the 3rd quarter

When it's an 11 point game, and a FG makes it a 1 possession game. Kick the FG.
Coaching wasn't terrible today especially play calling. But....
That first and goal at the 5 and you burn a timeout and manage to call a terrible play afterwards was a huge blunder. Scoring a td was a necessity and we blew it

That about sums it up

Its without question who lost them the game.

Not having Hunt in the game on that drive makes absolutely no sense. You need your best player on the field in crunch time. Not on the sideline in the biggest game in 15 years

didn't Campbell or someone say they "go with the hot hand" or something like that?
I suppose going with your best player is a good strategy too!

One would think
The offensive coaching staff is not cutting it. How many times have we had the ball at the 5 this year and could not come up with a play for a touchdown? The receiving corps has been inconsistent for too long. Something has got to change. Campbell should be building a staff to win a championship, not maintain ties to mediocrity.
Never hire your buddies, too hard to then fire them.

How many times did we have the ball inside the 5 and not have hunt in the game? Really quite amazing when you think about it. I am sure the opposing DC is sighing in relief ever time UT does that. Make it a lot easier playing D that for sure.

Even the first scoring drive, long run after long run he still seemed to think he had to pass for the TD. Yes, it worked, this time. But so would have the run.
There's some reasoning going on in his mind more than trying to keep ahead of the D, when he passes even though the D hasn't been able to stop even the runs into the predictable tackle. I can't tell if it's panic, over-think, reflex or trying to get that aspect of the game some shine but the results continually work against that effort. He's looking bad by trying to force something that doesn't exist.
Candle is Always out thinking himself. Russell has won some games for us. But that fumble on the kickoff. Man just plain dumb and stupid. You are taught to fall on the ball in pop Warner for crying out loud. And that hit on that guy. Wow! I just hope that young man is ok. One more thing. I honestly hope Ely does not get that extra year. We will be better off without him.
I think Ely cost you guys this game, besides the boneheaded targeting. He missed wildly on many throws.
Ely's been overrated. He CAN play well, but just because he's from Alabama and had a good HS career doesn't mean he is awesome on the college football field.
Now, their receiver #9 who did the hit against WMU -- he helped give NIU the MAC West trophy (as seen in pic!)
Russell has certainly never shown to be a dirty player. It was a total brain fart I hope to believe.
Wishing Brown all the best and congrats on the win. WMU came to play.

Woodside is the man that should have been the starter this year. I said awhile back. Ely was not playing in Alabama. If he was that good he would not have been on the bench. Candle needs to be replaced. No if ands or buts.
