I would suggest that their line play was also superior to ours on both sides of the ball for much of the game.
They train, practice, play & coach for championships. We don't. Game over.

Our university also needs to take a hard look at the the game atmosphere they are providing. Our season is going down the drain in front of our eyes and we are forced to endure some dingus who can't figure out Northern Illinois isn't in Iowa, people rolling around in giant condoms and pizza toppings racing to the end zone. Maybe it's just the extreme bad mood I'm in right now, but I don't know if I can take that dog and pony show anymore.

Yes, they reminded me a little bit of the BSU team that beat us a couple years in a row. Very disciplined and excellent execution. Maybe not quite as good as BSU, but close.
Not just a backup....a backup's backup! The dude was a 3rd string coming into the season until their 2nd string got hurt. Smh and he beat the "undefeated nationally ranked" Toledo Rockets.

Yeah the in game garbage is terrible. Makes you cringe during every timeout.

Exactly...I am so tired of all of these poorly timed, poorly thought out in game promotions, contests, and extremely annoying sideline announcers who I swear don't have a clue what going to a football game is all about.

Also, our music guy really sucks

I feel for you Aaron, Nate, Ranger and other diehard fans that put and have put much more money, time and effort into supporting this program than I do. You guys are one of the main reasons why going to games (home and away) are so much fun. It's why after the Arkansas game, I immediately looked over to you guys and thought this victory was as much for you as everyone else...

I still believe this team has a good chance of winning out, getting lucky, and finish the season with 10 or 11 wins...perhaps even a conference title. That'd be a good season even if it wasn't our dream season.

Don't get me wrong, I'm as pissed as anyone else on this board, but I still feel that this team is too good to tank the rest of the year...
I don't mind the contests during the breaks. It makes it fun for the kids. Make it fun for them and they will still want to come when they get older.

Then again I thought the flame pants were cool.
Not so sure you were out coached. Why NIU left so much time on the clock by going hurry up when in comfortable FG range, made little sense. And then not going for 2 to go up by 6 in case you scored and missed the XP. He got lucky neither mattered.
Rushing 291 yards but only 136 yds on 15 of 33 with the last three passes incomplete and an INT to end it. Bad snap turn over in the second quarter was a killer as was the no call on offensive PI

Not going for two was definitely perplexing. NIU's execution was not exactly awesome, either. They just recovered better- two horrible snaps, an INT, missed tackles- which makes OUR poor execution all the more frustrating. The game was there for the taking.

I think that Lembo coached Ball State team would have easily beaten both of the teams we saw last night. Toledo's coaching and play calling was poor and we played like crap. NIU is just simply not that great of a team, they are just a decent/average FBS team, we just laid an egg. We should have taken the game over in the 2nd quarter and used our dominant running game to continue to wear them down when we got the ball to start the 2nd half. We should have been up 17-7 at worst at the half if we just could have played mistake free. We all witnessed how we were bulldozing through them. Every carry was for 5 or more yards. No passing was required to set this up, they simply couldn't stop us. We had DJM and Remy standing by ready to assist. I just don't get the coaching at all. Use the tools that are working, and keep using it until they stop it. The NIU coaches get this, but ours don't. Even NIU fans were asking why we stopped pounding it straight ahead. Makes no sense. I would not want to go fishing with our OC. He would switch his rig every 15 minutes even after he found one that was already killing it!

Not really sure I understand this. We rushed for nearly 300 yards and held there running game in check except for a could QB runs breaking out.. I think UT dominated the LOS. The reason we lost is because they hit plays over the top of the defense which is inexcusable. We were in man coverage on 3rd and 29?? Are you kidding me?? Play 4 Deep and get off the field. Ely played absolutely awful. Our receivers drop way to many passes. I personally would love to see a more play action pass scheme. When you run the ball as effectively as we do, play action pass is almost unstoppable. What do we do? We go empty set and throw? we basically tell the D before the snap what we are doing. It would be different if we had a QB that could run out of the empty set... but that obviously is not the case. I said this in another thread, this was the worst loss in UT FOOTBALL HISTORY! We should have won that game by 21 points. NIU is not that good. Just very well coached and disciplined team.

To me, most of the blame has to go to the OC and DC who make the calls. The guys only do what the coaches tell them, but, to lose to a 3rd string QB, is unacceptable.

It was there to be picked up and walked away with over and over. . . Still trying to process this loss.

Same here...how do you get beat multiple times over the top? Those two long balls to Lewis over the top were defended by Whittaker and Swift...each reacted to the route the exact same way...bit on the 1st move and then spun completely around to try and catch up. To make matters worse...why do we have a FS...typically your slowest / largest DB trying to cover their deep threat. Is that poor scheming on our part or great play calling by the NIU OC to get into sets that we could not defend?

Why do you go away from an offense that is pounding the ball over and over? Why run empty backfield sets with a QB that is not a runner? I truly think that Ely would thrive in a pro-style, play action attack. Instead, we pound the ball at will and decide to get cute and change the flow of the game. Candle has been doing this for years...I'm sure he's a good guy and great recruiter, but man, his game management has been all over the map since he took over as OC.

It's hard to believe that we have 2 RB's with close to 150yds ea...playing against a team down to their 3rd QB and missing their top WR...and come out on the losing end. Unfreakingbelievable!!!! I was texting back and forth with some ex teammates of mine and we kept commenting on the fact that NIU knows how to win...they expect to win...their coaches know who they are and what their identity is...they stick to their plan. On the other hand, we can't get over the hump, play not to lose, get rattled easily and start throwing s*** against the wall offensively to see what will work...when it was plain to see by anyone with even a sliver of football knowledge....pound the freaking ball until they stop it. You could see the team unraveling in the 2nd quarter...I guess there weren't any miracle speeches at halftime. From here out, I'd keep things pretty simple if I were Campbell...If you drop a pass in your hands, your out and next man up. If you get beat over the top...your out and next man up. If you continue to call pass plays out of an empty set on 1st and 2nd down when we are getting 5-7yds a rush...you're freaking fired and I'm taking over play calling duties. There needs to be a sense of urgency...NOW...if not, this team will lose out...mark it down.

I wouldn't call us well coached and discplined. We played awful and our coaching staff should have eaten up more clock on that last drive and gone for 2 point conversion. Being ahead by 5 points does nothing for you. Two awful snaps led us to lose ton of yardage. Our punter has no distance. We gave up a fake punt in your own endzone on 4th and 8. Two turnovers. We have a lot to clean up and we have to do it all with a 3rd string QB and a walk-on QB as a backup.
