So, sitting next to my wife and 79-year old Mother, enduring multiple rain delays, and there are maybe 500 fans left in the Glass Bowl I proceed to crank up the hand siren as the Rockets kickoff after their last TD. One of our fine ushers tells me "I won't confiscate that from you but no artificial noisemakers..."

And the university should ask themselves why they don't get anymore donations from me.

No fun allowed...

May be the very last season I really care to follow UT sports. So many other things on my bucket list to accomplish.
The siren is almost as much a tradition as the canon. And it is not artificial, it is authentic! 03-thumbsup

Give the usher credit for knowing he wasn't going to confiscate it. 03-no
More of a stadium rules confrontation. Usher paid nothing to do a job getting a bad rap on this one IMO. He was respectful. Your Ma's 79. Filling her own bucket list. She probably paid him so as to not hear that thing from 1 foot away. Did your wife jack the usher? No? She's in on it. That's what they do that takes 15 minutes in the restroom, conspire. Just saying. You've got no chance here. It's submission time.

I dunno, I thought I heard the siren coming from a grassy knoll !! Oliver Stone would be proud !!
You have certainly had more than your fair share of problems with power tripping football ushers over the years. At one time I sort of wondered but what some of the marketing folks in the Athletic Department were perhaps a bit jealous of (or perhaps felt threatened by) the attention and enthusiasm generated by the Jambulance (and the Hoyt Rocket and other fan initiated projects), because for several years there it seemed that they went out of the way to provoke you, but who knows?

Sometimes it is almost as if they consciously try to discourage the most avid fans, and by the way the attendances have been dropping over the last decade, they have evidently enjoyed some success (although there are other important factors involving the decline in attendance as well).

Unfortunately there have been a lot of die hard Rockets fans who have fallen by the wayside for various reasons over the past decade.
Oh come on now, we have to have a bit of sense. Who makes the rules? UT? NO! NCAA. What do you guys honestly expect to happen here? Usher loses a job? Team and sports program gets penalized?
Cowbells, pennies in a soda bottle. . . are these real or artificial? How in the world is a siren not real? Don't get me going on those thunder sticks!
The ticket takers were also checking tickets for people entering after the rain delay. REALLY??? after a 3 hr rain delay, you're going to turn people away if they don't have a ticket? C'mon!

When I came in, some knucklehead made me lift up my ball cap. What I am going to smuggle in between my scalp and my ball cap? Is there a new Budweiser kippah can or something?
Google Mississippi State and cowbells...
Ill admit I did Google "kosher beer."
I see both sides. Yeah they should let something like go, but I'm sure that's one of the NCAA rules they are told to enforce.
If we have a full stadium of people with noise makers... That can get louder than opposing teams want to handle... I would understand confiscation if there were 26k of them, but one siren and one backup beeper doesnt do a thing in regards to giving UT an "unfair" advantage. You're just creating noise for the fans who stayed at home! Well appreciated.

I saw people with cowbells and thunder sticks and no one said anything to them. Either enforce a rule evenly and uniformly or not at all. Secondly, how about some good ol' common sense. 100 people left in the stadium and your worried about an artificial noise maker? Really? If the usher is that damn bored how about checking everybody's ticket to make sure they're sitting in their proper seats? That would've killed about 15 minutes for him.

Started studying at UT in 1997. Good ol' baggy cargo pants days. And coats with many pockets. I regularly would smuggle 8 beers in on my person before the game, then go back to my room in Carter at the half to reload another round. All for my buddies, of course...
Artificial noisemakers are not an NCAA rule.

We were allowed to carry in kegs and coolers - but no glass allowed. Ironic since it is "The Glass Bowl."
