Watched a lot of the game last night and was pretty impressed with the WMU team. MSU was much more physical along the lines, but Western more than matched up at the skill positions - most notably at KR. They will not face a DL like the one MSU threw at them in the MAC. They may get beat up a lot prior to MAC action - and they have both NIU and Toledo on the road. Got banged up pretty good against MSU and they still have Georgia Southern and OSU coming up in the next few weeks.

Fleck is still a poser. He plays to the cameras with that fakea$$ pregame speech in the locker room. He knew the cameras were in there - "...tonight we walk the streets of Sparta" and "men, tonight we have a date, a date with destiny..." I could go on, but I want to throw up just remembering that role he was playing - along with his banners of what Row The Boat means.

Tough thing for him will be what he has to create at his next destination because he can't replicate the whole RTB campaign somewhere else - or can he..?

Western has a very nice QB in Terrell and a couple of very good receivers. Saw some of the CMU-OK St game and Central was right there through 3 quarters. Not bad for a team picked last in the west.

BTW, MSU looked very average. Ohio State will destroy Western and dominate the Spartans. A big talent gap there.
Reid, WMU's wideout is a for real wideout. He could be an all leaguer in any conference.

He's definitely has NFL written all over him.

Cook is not a Heisman QB.
Cmu was picked behind emu?
As I have noted on several occasions, if WMU ever learns not to self destruct in key games, they will be a major force to be reckoned with.

Terrell doesn't get rid of the FB fast enough. Key is to keep pressuring.
Can't give any QB that has a receiver like Davis time to sit in the pocket.
The WMU game on black Friday should have a lot of MACC implications, and hopefully position UT for a good bowl...

I agree. I'm not sure that we would have looked any better against MSU. Western does have a tough road before MAC play begins. It could either toughen them up or take their will away. We'll see.
I was impressed with the play of WMU's secondary. Their OL could not get much of running game going all night, with or without Franklin.

I don't recall CMU being picked last in West. Pretty sure they were picked ahead of EMU, and I though they were ahead of BSU, which would make them 4th, IIRC.

Not one preseason report had CMU picked last. Some thought they may be in the MAC West running.
Quote:As I have noted on several occasions, if WMU ever learns not to self destruct in key games, they will be a major force to be reckoned with.

I think that really is the key. Under Cubit & now Fleck, it's the same tune: When our team is in gear and all, we will win all the games we're supposed to -- many times beating the spread... but when it comes to those key games, we will find a way to lose. When was the last time WMU had a key upset in the MAC West for the divisional title? Too predictable to win the games they should, lose the ones in the MAC West that would mean getting at the top.

Can't happen forever, but that's why I predicted WMU at 7-5 (L: MSU, @OSU, @NIU, @Toledo, @GA-Southern/BGSU/@Ohio). Heck, they could go 8-4 -- is possible. Heck, they could go 9-3 and beat Ohio State! We still wouldn't win @NIU + @Toledo to be MAC West champs - lol (IF they are to somehow beat an OSU team who's asleep at the wheel -- you heard that prediction here first).

It really does come down to that trigger to win the key game(s) against the teams aimed for 1st & 2nd place in the MAC West. Even when they're not touted higher.

They were picked 2nd to last. I think many just don't count EMU as a real team in the standings for potential position. In the MAC Preseason poll, they were picked 2nd to last but for some wacky reason they had 1 vote to be 1st place. I think that was CMU's coach who did that - lol.

But they did impress. THANKFULLY the CMU/WMU game is in Kzoo this year, so WMU can avoid the upset against a viable CMU squad.
