Emerald Coast Classic

Held at Northwest Florida State College Arena in Destin, Fla. Year No. 2 of the event features Iowa State vs. Virginia Tech and Illinois vs. UAB. Games will be played on Nov. 27 and 28.

Last year's champion: Ole Miss

Grade: B-. You get a preseason top 10 team (Iowa State), one of the best coaches on TV in the sport (Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech), a genuine intrigue (Illinois) and a Cinderella from last year's NCAA Tournament (UAB). Solid. Steve Prohm's first season with Iowa State is really going to be something to watch. How his team performs here could be big. ISU should win this event. But will it? And what will Va. Tech look like in its second year under Buzz?
It would not shock me to see Virginia Tech beat Iowa State. Buzz's teams are always competitive. This is going to be a really great tournament. I'm looking forward to the smaller venue as well. It should keep the players grounded and yield some great early season basketball.
I really can't wait for this basketball season to start 03-hissyfit
I was thinking a UAB - VT Championship myself. Any of the four teams can win it.

We don't need to trip up against Illinois. They are missing their PG and are expected to be at the bottom of the Big 10. I really would love to see us play OOC like we did the year we started 18-2 (09-10). We took P5 teams like Georgia and Cincinnati to the wood shed.

I agree. What we don't need to emulate from that season was the total collapse late in the year. That still grinds my gears 03-banghead
Illinois is no joke. Losing to middle of the pack p5 teams on neutral courts will not help our at large case. I want to play Iowa state again, that's the best team in the field.
Beach n' Basketball after Thanksgiving?? I really want to go, especially if there are special rates for a nearby hotel on Friday (and maybe Saturday) night!

If you don't have children, don't forget about airBNB. I used it for the Charleston tournament. Got a room in someone's house on the beach for 50.00/night.

You don't have to be. Coach Hunter is their brand. We'll get a TV game out of playing them.

GA State will be an interesting case study over the next decades as a comparison to the status of UAB over the same period. They are both relatively new urban universities in neighboring cities that are striving for national recognition for their athletic programs. The fact that their cities as late as 1945 were about the same size but with different state leadership qualities may be a part of the formula.

How will GA state leadership in support of that school's athletic future compare with that of UAB? Will both grow equally or will their growth follow the path of their host cities so that after 50 years there is no valid comparison?

I only care about the comparison between the two schools at around 9pm on December 1.

Your post as usual has nothing to do with the thread discussion.

About Dec. 1st you are correct. Now if the world just stands still in regard to the two schools at that point, my concern over the futures of the two schools will have no relevance. I am not assuming such a halt to be about to happen and 2016 will arrive on schedule for both schools, ready or not.
Looking like we will play 4 P5 teams OOC. 6 in 14-15, and 6 in 13-14. That's 3 really good years of scheduling.
The coaches son also is no longer playing on the team I believe.

Ga State's team will be different, ours will be mostly the same.

Playing for the Celtics. Ga State still a hot commodity though for the time being.
Georgia state is a fine non conference game. We need home games, and that's a quality opponent. I just pray that we don't see non d1's on the schedule, but I'm sure they'll be there.
If we are going to play a DII school (I hope we don't) play UAH. Make it a FreeUAB - UAH event!
