Really surprised me. I was wondering why it wasn't in Tuscaloosa. Now we know. UA strikes gain!
lol what a load of crap. this must've been written by Direct Communications..

Quote:“Dr. Bonner's concerns about the use of Coleman Coliseum were based on UA's ability to provide the significant logistical support that would be required to host an event of this size — with minimal planning time and the necessity of involving already committed campus resources — during a very busy time on our campus

UA, who has 100,000 people show up at a football game can't handle the logistics of a sold out crowd at Coleman? Graduation fills Coleman. And during a busy time on campus? You mean summer, when the student population is at its lowest?

Whatever, UAB will gladly cash that check. This is a perfect example of how athletics facilities, be it basketball or football, can be an asset to the community for more than their primary tenants. Imagine concerts at a UAB football stadium, for example.
We will gladly take an extra payday and show off the Bart. I'll even watch the fight next weekend.
That's a shame for Deontay. I'm glad we've made him feel welcome.
We'll get to show off our new lights!
Someone should give Mr. Wilder a #FreeUAB t-shirt and inquire about him donating a portion of this winnings to the UAB Football Foundation.04-rock
We could ask wilder to wear a freeuab shirt for his ring entrance

I wonder if the revenue received from this fight will go to the basketball budget? I am sure it should be enough to pay for Coach Hasse's new lights.
Athletics gets no money from Bartow Arena revenue... Shame!
Do you think all of UAB's top athletes came to UAB as their first choice? Sometimes you just get lucky when someone else makes a mistake, and you smile to the opportunity and say "Thanks, we are glad you came our way". I wish Mr Wilder the best and hope he has a bright future.

I've talked to the management of the arena - all Bartow revenue is reinvested into the Arena for upkeep/operations and to make improvements like the new LED lights.

The Arena is exclusively used by Athletics (other than a handful of events like graduations).
I'm glad that it's in Birmingham. It's history in the making, and I gladly bought tickets as soon as they were available.

Since I no longer live in Birmingham, I'm glad to give my money to UAB and Birmingham, especially in light of Tuscaloosa's response (or lack thereof). I don't believe I would have made the trip to Tuscaloosa anyways.

Actually, it looks like the City of Tuscaloosa was on board and were the ones trying to get UA to let them use Coleman, but was turned away.

If the UA response seemed like something you recall hearing before, check the reasoning stated when the Daughters of the American Revolution refused Marian Anderson's appearance at their Constitution Hall (she later sang at the Lincoln Memorial arranged by Eleanor Roosevelt). The similarity of reasoning is critical in light of the recent record of social diversity on campus..
You know, It think you're mostly FoS, but the more I think about it, the more I think if Wilder, had been named Shamus, and was a redhead, they'd have probably accommodated him.

What? I thought we were talking about boxing in 2015. Anyways, UAs loss is our gain. I expect Wilder to put on a clinic tonight and KO Molina early. It's exciting that this fight is in Bham but it's really just a a chance to for Wilder to showcase his incredible power in his home state. The real fight(s) will come when he faces someone like Povetkin or Fury enroute to a bout with Klitschko.
