To prepare for the presidency, Ms. Gaber said she’ll spend time meeting with additional stakeholders and said she’s willing to explore numerous issues, from town-and-gown relations to UT’s athletic conference membership.

Maybe one of her initial priorities will be to insist that the blah does not keep referring to the University of Toledo as the former medical college of Ohio.
She has more important things to concern herself with than anything to do with the blade.

The Blade's president headed the committee that hired her.
This was the "We" picked u so this is what "We" need u to do session with the Knife. The machete will come out when she deviates from their wants and desires which she will because she is supposed to serve the University of Toledo and not the Knife

Hmmm. That is interesting. I am a little surprised that was listed as a priority, not that I disagree. I wonder what she sees as the options. I still feel UT should be attractive to more visible conferences.

It wasn't listed as a priority, just something she was willing to examine. I suspect she was asked if that was something she was willing to examine and responded in the affirmative.

Always nice having a Syracuse Alumnist making decisions for UT.

Maybe she figures the lack of any recent MAC championships in FB, WBB and especially MBB means UT can not successfully compete in the MAC and she wants to consider dropping FB down to the FCS level and moving athletics to a lower level conference-----05-stirthepot

Funny, that briefly ran through my mind as well when I read the article. Then, I thought of the emphasis she is going to place on fundraising....athletic success & notoriety definitely help when it comes to fundraising. Build all of our programs up so that we are on the radar should an opportunity to move arise in the future. I'm afraid we're stuck where we are for the foreseeable future...need to start winning some championships.

She has been expose to really big time athletics at Arkansas, which is better in a way than having an Ivy Academic.
During her interview presentations she spoke about the importance of athletics. It helps give alumni and the community a sense of pride. People are more likely to open their checkbooks as a result.
I think she will do a great job as president.

I suspect that you & Tampa & Boca are right. Unless she was specifically hired to come and do a hatchet job on the Athletic Dept. (and it does not sound as if that was the case), I don't think any new president would want to start off their term of office by dismantling programs and alienating a significant portion of the alumni base (including potential donors).

I was just stirring the pot a bit because it is Wednesday and I felt like it. 03-wink

Except for the oft forgotten, or ignored, fact that MBB has our second most recent MAC championship after WXcountry. I know, I know, but whether people like to acknowledge regular season championships or not, we won it.

Winning the regular season championship allows you to hang a banner, but then so does winning the MAC Tourney.

However winning the MAC Tourney also gets you into the NCAA Tourney where millions of people are going to be filling out brackets with your name as one of the 68 anointed teams. Win a couple of games and everybody suddenly knows you name (Cheers!). Do that several years in a row with maybe one nice deep run and you will be discussed as the "next Gonzaga".....and, by the way, each game (NOT each tournament) you appear in earns about $1.5 million paid out over the next 6 years.

So while winning the regular season champion is certainly an accomplishment, the REAL prize (and team goal, I suspect) is winning the conference tournament.

Hence my "I know, I know" comment. And of course, setting money aside (I think other teams in the MAC get a cut as well) the MAC has been fortunate to have OU build their Gonzagaesque program from the momentum of their Final Eight performance, as did Kent before them. The MAC has benefitted from these outstanding performances from powerhouses like OU by getting multiple bids....wait, no they haven't, but at least OU and Kent are on the tip of the national media's tongue...wait, no they're not. But their performances did give them the $ and impetus to maintain their coaches and bag several elite recruits to keep their programs among the nation's best...whoops, nope, not that, either. We're the MAC. A regular season banner has roughly the same impact as an NCAA bid. To say UT isn't "competitive" is inaccurate. And, Yes, I desperately want an NCAA appearance.

Unfortunately, women's cc will likely be our only championship this year.

Unless they make Kent's women golfers play cross-handed, I fear you're right.
