UAB will honor the legacy of the late, great Gene Bartow when it hosts Southern Miss. in men's basketball action Feb. 7.

That's the date set for the sixth annual Gene Bartow Classic. On that day, $2 from each ticket sale, excluding season ticket sales, will be donated to the Coach Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Bartow, considered the father of UAB athletics, coached the Blazers' men's basketball team for 18 seasons from 1978-1995. Under Bartow, the Blazers reached the NCAA tournament nine times, including trips to the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 in the early 1980s.

Bartow, who also had stints at Central Missouri State, Memphis St., Valparaiso, Illinois and UCLA finished logged a career record of 647-353.

He died Jan. 3, 2012, following a lengthy bout with stomach cancer.

GB coached exactly 1,000 games? Interesting, I never knew that.

What was his overall record at UAB?
