Izell is our hero. Was he the player that was taken off the field in a stretcher, brought to the hospital and then brought back to light up the second half with his tremendous play? I can't remember that guys name but it sounds like something Izell would do. Does anybody else remember that game?
Rodregis Brooks who play for the Colts.
Izell drove a truck for UPS while playing during the last non-scholarship year. He did not need a waterfall.
And ended up playing for the Cowboys and another team or so.
Thanks guys. Was that the game against ECU when they came to legion field ranked #17?
How did these guys do those amazing things without a waterfall?

I think it was actually #18, but yes.

Thomas Cox was QB & also had a good game.

lol....they were men, they didn't need pansy a## waterfalls or statues of an old geezer to motivate them. Funny how that Liberace like weight room waterfall hasn't over the past 2 years, willed that crystal trophy for Gollum to drool over.
Seems rather fitting irony for them, no?
(Says the fan of the football-less university...)

The medics had to cut his game jersey off to treat him so when he returned to Legion Field, they had to go into the stands to find his mother. Since she had one of her son's jerseys on, she had to give up her jersey so he could put it on to reenter the game. That remains one of the great stories of our Blazer football history.

BTW, David Garrard, one of ECU's top QBs never could get a victory over UAB during his career there.

I see Garrard at the nearby grocery store and he's opening a gym soon (Jacksonville, Fl).I still remember the 1999 game.

#17 was stuck in my mind too. My boss was a ECU grad so I invited her and her husband to the game.
Can't recall the exact polls at the time but ECU was ranked either #17 or #18 in one poll & maybe unranked in some of the other ones.

Not sure if that was when only the top 20 was used in the rankings.

Interesting though is that Southern Miss may have been ranked around that when they came to Legion Field a few years back & JP & gang defeated them preventing a Sugar Bowl bid for them.

Speaking of not getting victories over UAB, I think Austin Davis from USM only won 1 out of 4 attempts vs UAB.
Correct. Davis was a freshman for the 70-14 debacle. He never beat us again. Interesting fact: Callaway won the next three games with 3 different QBs. Counting McGee's first year, 4 years with 4; Joe, Ellis, JP, and Brown.
