She expanded the university.
Was recognized for the largest research grant in the history of UAB. Improved national rankings.
Achieved historic fundraising marks.
Set the strategic plan that led to the green, the commons, the award-winning student rec center.
AND, maintained UAB football.... Despite the BoT.
And to think, that little ol' spitfire nurse has outperformed the mighty neurologist. Yeah... He's got an axe to grind. So, why not strike what she "likely" lost her job over?
(Other than the fact that he is a baseline a$$hole...)
I tend to think that he's just a pretty typical eastside guy who thinks money spent on student life, undergrad, or athletics is wasted money that quite properly should have been channeled to his research budget.
That and he has the bedside manner of a tree surgeon.

Perhaps (hence my baseline a-hole comment). But, the evidence that she did more, and he has allowed things to slide, must assault his ego.

My tree surgeon had much better bedside manner. Didn't even cut down trees that didn't need it.
Dr. Cassius Brutus Watts did exactly what he was hired to do by the UA BOT leadership that employed him. We may consider him something less, but the BOT leaders consider him a resounding success -- by their standards.
He apparently bought their line that the state is about to cut SETF funding even more in the next several years and to protect his / their UASOM, he must cut out the football program because the cost of the promised (to FBHC Clark) facility upgrades at UAB were going to be substantial. Who can guarantee that Montgomery politicians won't (to save money & spite B'ham) turn the B'ham SOM over to the USASOM by 2020?
That's not a reason to be a dick, though. If anything, if he felt that slighted by the former president then he would have been more aggressive by doing good things for the school and ultimately outdoing her. I think it's just like Band Dad said. He's probably just another guy that has a drastically different point of view and honestly believes that money spent on things like undergraduate and athletics is money not being spent on medicine or research. The Board probably capitalized on that and figured they could use him to get the school on the decline.
Still, it's hard to make the argument that even he believes he's doing the right thing when he's using such nefarious means to achieve what he wanted done.
Ya'll do realize that this is semi-serious, i.e. tongue-in-cheek.
