watts blames mackin article

Quote:"We worked with Brian and respect his decision. Let me just tell you, we were absolutely dumbfounded by it, because we all agreed in recent weeks this was the plan forward," Watts said. "They've led the process, not me."

Watts said Mackin led the strategic study that would eventually lead to the university cutting its football program.

He said Mackin handpicked CarrSports as the consultant on the project that looked at the sustainability of all of the school's athletics programs.[quote]
Mackin might have picked Carr. But that wouldn't even mean he dictated the terms of the study. Could very well have been a phone call placed by PBJ which gave the terms of the study for all we know.
I have a hard time believing Margison led this process. I've had many personal conversations with him and he has supported football.
how many twisted lies can be told. how embarrassing for my alma mater
Anything from tWatts' mouth = lies and misdirection.
Just shows the utter lack of integrity of WATTS!!!
Mother Heifer...
As much as I am pissed at Mackin I find that hard to believe much less anything out of Rat Watt's mouth.
If the results made you all dumbfounded, then why didn't you question the results? Why not get a different consultant? Why not have a conversation with your athletics administration and other leaders before moving forward on a decision with such far reaching implications?

When there is a funding gap, you look for solutions rather than give up. If we don't have the funds we need for research do you say okay time to shut down the research labs? No. You put forth effort on things that you care about. It's clear you and many on the BOT never cared about UAB athletics.
Lol, this is such a freaking joke. He's trying to lay the blame on 2 people who are now no longer in their positions.

Agreed.

Mr. Mackin had 300,000 reasons to do the things he did, but Dr. Watts is a proven liar. I don't believe anything he says and won't unless he provides evidence that isn't manufactured or subjective.

Yep, while that POS pulls down $850k annually... What a pathetic excuse for a human.

I think dumbfounded was in reference to Mackin resigning. However, I agree with your other points and it's exactly why I believe the goal was to kill football and find a reason to justify it. Had they led a campaign to save it, been transparent in the process, and in the end we fell short I can live with that a lot easier. This was a murder set to look like a suicide.
I think that Brian was playing it very close to the vest and doing the best he could. I've ripped him for not standing up, but I find it hard to believe that he set UAB athletics up to be sunk.

Now Watts, I find it very easy to believe that he's lying his ass off, putting Mackin, the report, and anything or anybody else he can think of between himself and the truth getting out.

He's not dunbfounded by the results. He's either dumfounded by the fact he's getting the heat for the study when he wasn't the one behind it or Mackin resigning.
We wouldn't have fallen short that is the point. We could have sneezed 25 million in a week
If any of this was true, then Margision or Mackin would have given the announcement. Instead they're nowhere to be found. Watts came in there yesterday, assassinated a program, and had a pathetic press conference.

I recall him saying during the press conference that they were "shocked" by the results. Whether dumbfounded or shocked about the results, either way, there should be more questions asked on an issue as big as this. Not just accepting the study at face value without questioning it or considering alternative solutions.

There was never any attempt to find a solution though. Their solution was predetermined by the fact they hated the mere existence of UAB football. Not even dropping back a division was considered. Why? Because they know that we would have made it work and would have moved back up to Division I. This particular "solution" of dropping football altogether was very intentional because they knew the damage to our program would be far more significant even if we were able to succeed in bringing it back some day.
I completely agree. Nobody doing an honest assessment of anything gets back a half-assed study like this and makes the decision on it. If you want it to succeed then you find alternate solutions, enlist support, communicate with business partnerships and donors, start a campaign, etc.
Well at least we know he is starting to feel the heat.
Didn't Ray Watts say back in November in his statement that he didn't have to follow the results of the study?

Who can believe or trust this lying coward?
