Some UAB fans have voiced their opinions on tonight's Wisconsin game in such a pessimistic fashion that I felt obligated to say this because it's the big elephant in the room.

UAB hired Haase. UNC/Kansas guy, everyone was excited. Haase came in and had to take the horrible remnants of what Davis left and put something on the court. That took 2 years. So he gets his guys this year and they are freshman with the exception of a few. Now, we play Wisconsin (and lose to USF and others) and UAB fans such as maybe even you reading this are saying he's a bad coach, etc, etc.

Okay, sorry, but this must be said. Every UAB fan acts like success is owed to us. We're spoiled from the early Bartow/Anderson years. You MUST understand that being a tournament team doesn't just happen over night, it isn't just easy. Haase recruited a top 60 guy and held 3 other top players in state. He also has a FRESHMAN running the point in Norton. This isn't like some magic wand easy fix thing, it doesn't happen this quick. With these guys, when you play Wisconsin you're just going to lose. Sorry, but you are, and lose big at that.

Florida tomorrow, please don't expect a win. They're hurt and young too but that's a program with a financial backing UAB's dream can't even reach.

Trust in Haase, give him time. Just don't call for his job because he's losing to USF and Wisconsin. This rebuilding job isn't easy.
Great post!

Agree! We are in the instant gratification generation. Young teams have to figure out the leaders and learn to play as a team.

Losing to USF and Wisconsin is fine at this stage. It's the UNC-Pembroke's and Louisiana-Monroe's that are the problem. That said, it is early...I'll wait and see who we are come conference slate.
I watched the game again, and took many positives away. Despite the ugly score, the Blazers were very much in the game until we went cold around the 10 minute mark. If this tournament helps us prepare for and have a chance to win CUSA, it's worth it to take three straight bags, even if it's a little uncomfortable to watch.
I have no problem with being patient, but you can't just blanket give Haase a pass. This team is how it is because of the coach, aside from losing Frazier. This is his third year and we are probably going to have the worst year we've ever had in our history. We're predicted to win 12 games. Next year if we barely win 15-17 games in a super weak CUSA are people going to be happy with that and say we need to keep giving him time? Because that is likely what will happen. I don't think anyone honestly thought we would beat Wisconsin. A lot of our better teams in the past decade would've lost by 20 points to Wisconsin tonight, but it's not about Wisconsin.

The problem is that Haase isn't winning games he should be winning. You have to remember Mike Davis got fired for a single 115 RPI season, among some of his other failings. Haase has had two seasons already that are worse than that and about to have a third season a whole lot worse than that. At some point you have to stop making excuses.
So what else is happening the future. How does this football thing turn out?

Lol, I'm not claiming to predict the future, but so far Haase's tenure hasn't looked very good. The guy can recruit and I really like him, but I don't think any of us know if he can actually coach well from how the past two seasons have gone.
Norton's a freshman in what, his fifth college game? The guy on him is a senior and was an All-Big 10 defensive player the last two years.

Everyone knew that things would be tough early, and then that redoubled when we lost Chad Frazier's services. It's going to be a tough year. I just hope that things are coming together by conference play.

If you looked at the teams playing in this tourney and figured on coming in and playing Cinderella, well, that's not happening this time.
We may be a basketball school come Monday. If we lose football, basketball has to be a win now program to have any hope in keeping our other athletic programs competitive. I may be wrong, but I am drunk, so I'm probably wrong. Go Blazers!
No one is surprised that we lost to Wisconsin. No one is really questioning haase because of that game. I am questioning haase because of the really bad results thus far during his tenure and all of the bad losses. If he had great seasons in season 1 and 2, everyone would've been saying how great of a coach he was. So just because he had two bad years, you can't give him a complete pass. The proof is in the pudding. If we don't do drastically better next year, as in ncaa tournament, I think he should be gone.
Why are we calling Haase a great recruiter? That still remains to be seen.

We shot so poorly as a team in the first half. If we could have been within 8 and come out with the intensity we did in the second half, we could have made a game of it. That being said, the first 5 minutes or so of the second half, our guys came our playing hard. Now, Haase needs to figure out how to get our guys playing like that for 40 minutes. We also did a pretty decent job on the boards all night. I figured we'd lose that battle by about 40, and we wound up with 1 fewer rebound. Lee was able to play a decent number of minutes, and looked fine the entire time. We got a lot of guys minutes in this game too. That's about where the positives end for me, but there were some at least.

We still have too many turnovers. Every player except Lee and Norton have at least one turnover in the box score. We still shot very poorly. Part of this is Wisconsin being so much bigger, but we have consistently shot poorly. Our bigs took far too many fouls early. I get that you don't want to give up easy baskets, but we can't have all these guys picking up 2 fouls in 2 minutes of game time. We weren't helping each other get good looks. Sullivan had a couple of really nice passes, and Norton had his one assist, which was really nice, but for the most part he was held in check last night. I think this is a major issue with such a young team, we just aren't moving the ball like we want to. I see enough talent on this team to do good things in the future, it's just very, very raw.

we will see at the end of the season how much better the team is .
last year I didnt see much improvement as a team from the beginning of the season to the end of the season
It's a process?

Actually I'm fine with our progress & potential with this team.

We regressed last year. That's when I began to question Haase.
Agree with MB RBB and a couple others. I expect this team to be competitive and playing well second half of the season. I expect some sort of post season next year. NCAAs the next two. Short of that I will question him. I think so far he is a hell of a recruiter who was dealt a bad hand by Davis and had to deal with a short window to recruit with along with APR restriction his first year.

People forget how bad the APR restrictions hurt this program. It was worse than many NCAA sanctions that we have seen.

I also it is a little silly to say this will be our worst season ever. I have seen our worst and this isn't.
I expect

This season - Competitive
Next - Post season NIT
Three years - NCAA
Four years - NCAA

Anything short of that and I will jump on the Haase hot seat. Otherwise I plan to enjoy this ride we are going to be on.

This is if we don't lose football and what momentum we have in recruiting is killed.

Mehinti
Cokley

Frazier = kicked off the team
CJ = really?
Mehinti = He has improved from his first season.

The rest of that list are unproven on a college level. Like I said, remains to be seen.

I think this is a solid timeline. With a core of Frazier, Brown, and Washington, I was expecting at least NIT this year. However, given the way Brown and Washington have played thus far, I don't know if Frazier would have been able to drag us that far anyway.

In any case, Haase still gets a pass for this year, but I've still been rather unimpressed with his X's & O's to date. My biggest concern is all the scholarships tied up with the current freshman and sophomore classes. At this early stage in the season, I believe we have a very solid core, but we don't have that "special" guy yet. With each next recruiting class, Haase can't have any swings and misses and needs to at least hit one homerun.
