I take it you're not very optimistic about the future of the football program.

Even if he decides in our favor this whole thing has been a cluster. Talk about a leadership vacuum. Of all the good this university has done for Alabama and the country THIS is the thing that most everyone will remember.

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

Wouldn't the only people able to fire him be the ones he might be working for?

We need to start putting up "FIRE WATTS" signs all over campus

As I understand it, a vote of no confidence from the faculty is a serious thing and something that a university administrator doesn't often survive. That would probably be our best chance.

Actually the reasearchers at SOM are who Watts is working for. It is their agenda to devote more resources ($$$$) to the east side. They are much more important to him keeping his job than we are. (It may support the agenda of some BOTers but is not the originator)

Further the majority of the faculty is indifferent to athletics at Most colleges including UAB. They do not understand why their budget was cut 10-20 % while athletics went up 20 %. A revolt over athletics is unlikely

One of the worst things about the situation is that it could have easily be rectified. He didn't have to get somebody to write up a letter that didn't say much of anything. He didn't have to get in front of a camera. All he had to do was release a statement that said something along the lines that he was committed to athletics and UAB football regardless of the results in the requested study.

That's all. Meeting with the new foundation, fighting to secure better facilities, and working with the city would have been great, but all I needed was someone in the know to say that all the speculation was wrong and that it was going to be okay.

It's not even a problem with UAB itself. It is the pressure being exerted by a group of people that don't have our best interests at heart. And he shuts down? What would he do in the face of more egregious situations? What if he had to deal with the alleged academic misconduct said to be going on at some schools? What if had to deal with the allegations that there was an entire subculture of sexual abuse that has become a part of a school's culture?

If he folds on something that can be resolved with a few words and better actions, how could we expect him to show any leadership going forward? If he's so short-sighted that he thinks going through with this is the right thing to do then how can we expect him to make reasonable decisions in the future?

I'm still waiting for him, Mr. Mackin, or anyone else to come out and make me look like a paranoid dummy. Until then, I don't have any faith in either one of them.

The whole research vs undergraduate argument I've heard since my days as a work study student. It's a load of crap. There isn't enough dough on the planet to placate some of these people. If money isn't flowing into their department or lab it's a waste. What we need is a better crop of researchers who are more competitive when it comes to grant app time. We've dropped in NIH funding rankings because these people just aren't getting the job done.

In defense of the researchers, grant writing has became a lot tougher. Pots of money have been consolidated and opened up to more researchers. Every university had to deal with this so it no excuse for the relative drop or to gut the undergrads side. Just noting it's gotten a lot tougher to get grants.
