ok, so to prolong the legacy of the most exciting almost recruit in recent rocket memory (now that patrick beverly is firmly established in the nba) it seems that sammis hawaiian style career has been less than dreamy.

first, he struggles to get through ncaa clearinghouse. then, once he gets cleared he hurts his toe and is off the court for conditioning and early practices. next, the school fires their head coach and top asst a week before the season due to altering paperwork on admission forms. (in a modern basketball kafka novel story hawaii - who recruits many foreign players - white outs and rewrites financial data on a couple foreign players paperwork to show they have more money than they really do as student athletes because the school won't admit broke foreign students. an overzealous university compliance officer rings the alarm to the ncaa instead of allowing the school to address it in house and a nervous new school president calls for heads. the rainbows' best player- the super fun to watch samoan new zealander isaac fotu- is declared ineligible for the sin of not having much money which someone covered up without his knowledge. fotu says screw the ncaa and leaves school to go pro). now, with half a staff and without their best player hawaii begins the season and sammie immediately breaks his hand. surprisingly, the bows are off to a great start including a win over pitt. reyes is yet to play a game - although rumors of his pickup game dunks resonate around campus and local sports talk...

Almost as good as a certain former UT' assistant's story about Cozzell McQueen.
I assume Cozzell was almost a Rocket?

That's what one assistant said back in the day.
Supposedly UT had inside track but NCSU wooed him away very late.
yeah, i heard that story too back in the day. only ended up being a good (not great) college player but would have been a signature ut recruit.

More than one assistant there were multiple stories of it in the Blade.

A sad thing I heard was during his visit here he went out to eat with Harvey Knuckles and Harvey had to read him the menu.
Cozzell McQueen got a lot of notoriety by being a starter on Jim Valvano's NC State NCAA National Championship team that beat Houston's Phi Slamma Jamma guys when nobody gave them a chance.

Actually McQueen was probably the least vital starter and although most of them got a tryout with the NBA, none of them had remarkable NBA careers----Thurl Bailey and maybe Sidney Lowe did the best but nothing really special. I don't think Derreck Wittenburg or Lorenzo Charles or McQueen made any NBA noise to speak of. Terry Gannon who was the sixth man and a three-point specialist before there even was such a thing as the three point shot went straight into sports announcing.

It was the one assistant that supposedly was recruiting McQueen that was
promoting the story true or not. McQueen became famous because of a tip in on a missed free-throw that put a NCSU-Pepperdine NCAA tournament game into OT. It was critical point along the WolfPacks' title run.
The Assistant was current Oakland coach Greg Kampe
