Don't get me wrong, UAB games are the only reason I go there. I understand, and I understand some over the mountain dad telling his daughter "No way in hell are you two going down there by yourselves!".
OCS. What else is new? For now we have LF.
I have many years of experience in trying to get the dubious to games there.
On a positive note, what an awesome day for football tomorrow. Can't wait!

Do people really have that perception of UABs campus? I never got that impression, and I lived on campus or in south side for about 8 years on and off.
The legion field area is not nice by any means, but if people are actually afraid of going there, they need to get out more. I've never had any issues there. People need to grow up and , get out more, and see the world. There really are some scary places out there. Legion field isn't one of them..
Over the Mountain peeps tend to expect to be slaughtered if they go downtown.
It was the same way for City Stages back in the day. You had to reassure people that they could drive down there, park, and walk around surrounded by 40,000 other people and be safe, because downtown.
There is a palpable "if I go into the big city the scary black people will get me" vibe in the 'burbs.
Nevermind that the place they are far more likely to suffer from a robbery/assault is the Galleria parking lot.
'Cause scary black people have cars too, and can drive to where the money is. Duh.
Lots of crimes going on in the Brook.

I have been going to Legion Field for over 35 years. I have never had a single bad experience and have personally only heard of one such incident in all that time. That's not to say that we wouldn't benefit from -- and DESERVE -- an OCS. We would and we do. But using LF as an excuse not to go to games is just that -- an excuse.
Amen to everything you said! The only thing I'd add is that I've been going to LF for over 40 yrs without a single issue. These are the same people who wouldn't dare get on a subway in NYC or Boston for fear of being mugged. The whole world is not pretty, but everything outside of your own little neighborhood is not a deathtrap, neither.

That's true but the sad reality is some of people in the OTM area think too highly of themselves and that they are too good to stoop to a lower economic level and attend a UAB game at LF.

It ain't just the OTM people.
I'll be at the game tomorrow, just like I have for many years.
However, to my knowledge - Legion Field is the only stadium in the area that has had gun fire on it premises while a football game was on tap. It's happened once or twice. Many people don't forget that. I haven't.
I also remember being shocked the first time I had to go through a metal detector at a Birmingham City high school football game. I went through several while my two kids were in high school. I'm unaware of any schools outside the B'ham School system that feel the need for having metal detectors. While I saw no problems at all - the detectors are in place for a reason.
Just being honest here. If I know this.... Many others do too.
I most certainly agree that trouble can take place anywhere. And it most certainly does .
