Like others stated the other day, I have always been a football first fan. However, with the recent state of affairs (football last 9 or 10 years, basketball last few years), I think it may be time to switch focus. We have all seen the setback a program can experience when it loses a good coach, so keeping Coach K is a no-brainer if it can be arranged financially.

So, here's the plan. Have football sign for two or three payday games per year. Take those checks for the first five years or so and sign them over to Coach K. After about five years or so, the success of the basketball program will be bringing enough of its own money in to then fund Coach K's salary.
Basketball has defiantly improved but still hasn't won a MAC in I don't know when.... If they don't do it this year not sure they ever will.
I think it will be clear that the MAC is a better basketball conference than football conference, this year!
basketball has won the mac a couple times in the last 8 years, but in bball the regular season title only gets you a trip to the NIT. we haven't won the mac tourney in 34 years

Football payday games are going to be tougher to get as P5 teams play more conference games and each other more. Looks like OSU is done playing MAC schools after they finish up a few contracts.

Winning a MAC division in my opinion is not winning the MAC. Since winning the Tourney gets the NCAA bid, that should be the goal.
While I love football, basketball is cheaper and if you watched the VCU game, it would be fun to go to an atmosphere like that. If I were being objective, I would say the MAC would be better off dropping down or getting rid of football all-together. Come up with a playoff system for the mid majors to make interesting and forget worthless bowls in Idaho. When you think about all of the money being thrown into black holes like EMU, Miami of Ohio, Kent st, etc. for football , it is really of waste of money. It would be money better spent on academic scholarships. For schools to spend that much money every year, so that they get their shot at a championship maybe once every 8-10 years is really silly. Basketball is cheaper and easier to maintain. The MAC has allowed ESPN to control the season schedule with all of these mid-week freeze your butt of at 8pm, get home about midnight games. Games where they rarely show the stands, because they are empty. It has made purchasing season tickets almost worthless.

Pono isn't talking about divisions. He's referring to the overall league championship. I know you're talking about the tournament championship but we have been MAC champs as recently as last year. NCAA money is nice but you're basically one and out if you're a MAC team. Still people seem to measure you by your tournament success and UT has only won one.
BTW I am a hoops first guy but love football, too. We are one of the few that is usually good at both.
Isn't basketball something tall people play during wrestling season? BRING BACK WRESTLING!!!

Stan went 14-2 his 2nd to last year to win the regular season championship and lost in the tournament final.
Maintaining momentum is bringing in a quality coach after Coach K gets swept somewhere else.

I think he needs a few NCAA tournaments before we start thinking about that.
