Most of you who are reading this know who I am. I was the mascot and a student leader on campus for 5 years at UAB, in part while Brian was hired at UAB.

So, as I write this, I do not take lightly what I'm about to say next. Not at all.

I've been a die-hard UAB fan for over 12 years. Hell, I've even make a permanent mark on my body in support of my experience at UAB, particularly with UAB Football and Basketball.

However, I'm tired of this. I've tasted what UAB can be with a real leaders at the helm (like Clark and Haase) and I want more.

Over the last few years, I've been mentored by a couple of amazing leaders who are leading our company to do some pretty amazing things. I'm truly humbled to have seen some amazing leadership firsthand.

And you know what I hear them talk about on an almost daily basis? Setting a vision - a goal - for those around them - coaches, staff, and franchise partners alike.

They understand that a staff works best when they are all working towards a common goal.

And now that I've seen some amazing leadership first hand, it's pretty apparent when there is a clear void of leadership, as illustrated by your statement.

"Premature to speculate?" - Those three words cut like a knife.

Why would you say such a thing? Especially if there was any speculation around YOUR ATHLETIC DEPT.

The only reason I could gather is that you're not concerned with leading YOUR ATHLETIC DEPT.

Maybe you need it defined for you - no problem. After digging around the web a bit, I've found a decent definition that I feel sums up leadership pretty well.

Quote:Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.

Brian Mackin, where is you leadership?

Why are you not using your social influence to put an end to this?

Why are you not maximizing the efforts of fans and local businesses to show support for UAB Football?

Why are you letting the opportunity to driving fans, staff, and players to the achievement of a goal - new facilities and an OCS - pass you by like a ship in the dark?

Maybe you're content with standing around while YOUR ATHLETIC DEPT. is shuttered.

I'm not. Neither are others in the fan base. Or the community. Or in local business.

Brian Mackin - The silence from your "statement" speaks volumes.

We're not abandoning UAB Athletics. However, I think it's time that you did.

Well said B4L. Even if we come out of this with football intact, Mackin has alienated himself from the fan base so much that the relationship has already been fractured to a point beyond repair. I won't be able to ever look at him the same way again, just a BOT puppet.

I throw up a little in my mouth everytime I read mackin's name. In the cloak of darkness and secrecy he has been in on all of this. Why can't someone that has a pair be AD like maybe Oliver?

Same here...I can't stand bootlickers. He and Watts need to go after this, although highly unlikely. The damage has been done, & who in their right will trust them after this? What possible outcome in this debacle can keep them in good standing with Blazers fans and supporters now?
Not to completely let Mackin off the hook, but it is a fact that he is what compares to a midranked officer (like a major) when top command people (the ones with stars on their epaulets) are really making all the decisions about policies. Remember - They are the ones signing his paychecks, not the fans. "If it was ME, I wouldn't let the potential loss of my job keep me from coming out with public statements contrary to those of my bosses" is much easier to say than to do.

I don't know that he would be able to count on "whistle-blower" protection if he broke ranks with those above him in the chain of command.

I understand that. However, he is a slave to his 300k salary more than he is a martyr to the university "he loves." and that is my problem and many others problems as well.
You actually expect him to be a martyr?
No I don't. But would you rather be thought a warrior or a *****?

boob?
Mackin is certainly a boob.
We also need a campaign to fire Watts.
How hard would it be to have a vote of no confidence?

I wondered about that. Not sure of the faculty senate but surely the NAS and SGA could do it. But that would require the NAS to do something other than solicit members for money.
He and Mackin already have my "vote."
Gotta love the bravado. First of all, nobody on this message board knows for sure what the crap is going on. That's a fact. But if the death sentence for UAB football has already been issued as some on here think, what is Mackin supposed to say or do without publicly dissing his boss and committing career suicide? This decision will be made by someone in a higher pay grade with or without his support and public statements.

Every message board has at least one poster who knows everything.

He has to do noting of the sort. All he needs to do is stand up and ask for the commitment of the President to facilities and an OCS that HIS ATHLETIC DEPT is lacking.

But, in his words, it's "Premature to speculate?"

Mackin is standing around like a boob.

The president had a chance to tell us all to stop being paranoid and that football wasn't going anywhere, and he tanked it.
