I know there are possible lay-offs on the medical side and no pay raises this year... I was thinking we'd hear some "exciting" news about the future of the campus this semester.

The annual UA BOT Board meeting in Tuscaloosa is this Thursday and Friday. We should at least hear the enrollment numbers for this fall... anyone heard anything else?
Sorry, just saw the agenda... nothing too exciting, but I found this:

Quote:Consideration of Resolution granting Approval of The Closure of UAB Centers within the Collat School of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, and School of Nursing

Same consideration for the School of Medicine as well... anyone know what this means?
Somebody splain for us:

Consideration of Resolution granting Approval of The
Closure of UAB Centers within the Collat School of
Business, College of Arts and Sciences, School of
Dentistry, School of Medicine, and School of Nursing

I guess we both were wondering.
Consideration of Resolution noting Retirement of Trustee
Andria Scott Hurst

Since she is retiring I will come out and say she has been a huge UAB Athletics supporter. I shudder to see who she is replaced with. She does not care for the evil three either.

I suspect her successor will be named Ben Dover.
Losing Hurst will hurt. Although it's arguable what, if any, influence she had on the board given her extreme minority position as a UAB supporter.
She had some all though the issue is she was outnumbered. I really don't want to say some things just yet until she is officially gone but she was good for us. ;-)
Shouldn't Cubby be near rotating out?
He is like a cockroach.

A cockroach only lives about a year........unfortunately, this old geezer has been on the board for what, about 15 years now?
I'd have to dig to find it, but don't they serve a maximum of 3 six year terms?

They might have to have a secret vote on that rule soon.
I thought he's turned in notice to retire just they haven't found an heir yet
Sometimes we forget that the shrinking state funding since 2008 from the SETF is for ALL public schools, not just K-12. That shrinkage of nearly $1400 per pupil since 2008 (#1 in cuts in America) places a strain on ALL public schools that are funded from that SETF and UAB is no exception. That is why tuition has been increased at UA campuses (and AU as well) by over 40% since 2008.

Were it not for federal research money, more severe cuts might be in the works for even the medical side which usually is the recipient of those grants. In the last session in Montgomery, UAB received an additional $1 million from the SETF to pursue medical research under the "Carly's Law" funding.
You're right. I forget about that a lot.

Where would we all be without you to remind us of this every chance you get?
I'll throw this one in, since BNBF has raised education. Those snakes on Goat Hill in Montgomery are trying to do away with having separate funds for the education budget and the general fund. The only reason for them to push for this is to raid the education budget to fund the general fund shortfall.

Get in your legislator's ear and raise hell. Education in this state is bad enough without allowing this to happen. Hell, that's the reason we have two funds in the first place, to keep them from pissing away the school money.

The so and so's need to either cut spending or raise taxes to cover the spending... and it's a Republican lege, so you know they'd rather strangle than raise a dime's worth of taxes, no matter how big the deficit is.

He's also hit or is about to hit the board's mandatory retirement age.

Unless they raise it again.

Sure, raise it again... He doesn't look a day over 60...
