Remember that all these figures are from voluntary self reporting by the various school's Athletic Departments, not from independent outside audits reviewing how their money was spent. What the figure could indicate is that 20 programs have more revenue than they can spend on all who or what they consider important. (How many political big shots did AU and UA take for free rides to their bowl games and charge it to their respective Athletic Department? - and who would risk telling about it?) It takes a lot of income to average spending about $200,000 per athlete* (as AU and UA have done the last 5 years) and still have money left over.

Frankly, I'm surprised there's 20 turning a profit.
I would guess that the reason why some of the 20 turn a profit is due to the conference affiliation paycheck.

I would guess that there isn't a single word for "there are" thereby there's may be acceptable.
