In 2000 UAB went 7-4
In 2001 UAB went 6-5

Anyone know why we didn't go or wasn't invited to a bowl?

Delchamp kept us out a the bowl in Mobile at least once.

There weren't 376 bowls back then.

Because bowls aren't about rewarding teams that have winning records despite popular belief. It is about selling tickets and it was decided that UAB wouldn't bring enough fans to whatever bowl they were sent to.

That is also the reason the only bowl UAB has gone to is the Hawaii bowl, because that bowl is not going to bring a ton of fans anyway.

It is why the whole bowl setup is the biggest farce in athletics.

there were 25 bowls total in the year 2000 and 2001. Not enough bowl slots, coupled with UAB not having a name associated with football and a decent travelling fan base.

If UAB was to go 6-6 or 7-6 this upcoming season, it would likely be one of the 2 or 3 teams with a winning record that's left out of a bowl. Hopefully we can squeeze into one or have a record good enough that we merit immediate consideration

An even bigger question: Would you rather see a 6-6 UAB go to the Poulan Weedeater McDonald's Drive Thru Bowl, or no bowl at all?

It's another football game isn't it? Not a tough question.

See. There it is again. It doesn't matter how good your record is (once you have six wins, and that won't matter much longer).

You're probably right. But would the Liberty Bowl for example, if UAB was #1 out of the CUSA (god-willing) would the Bowl really choose the alternate of the #7 team in the AAC? I suppose it's contingent on the specific teams involved. But if the situation is really that dire, it's hard to hold out hope

7-6 gets us bowling…
as other state, it does have a ton to do with fan support. but don't forget that it also has a lot to do with conference affiliated bowls. the makeup of the conference and the # of bowl tie ins back in 99/00 was such that there was more room to leave a team out

I hope we get to see what traveling crowd we'd take to a bowl game not in Hawaii in Christmas Eve.

Thanks for the imsight. What is the apparent incident that one of the trustees didn't approve of UAB going to a bowl because it was not financially prudent?

7-6 puts us division Champs btw. You probably mean 7-5 because you know division Champs usually don't have 5 losses

Heck yes we take any bowl we can get. It's better than sitting at home + it gives UAB some publicity + gives the players & staff a trip + it's "almost" like have a mini-spring camp.

That scenario is exactly what prompted the Liberty Bowl to change the language of the contract. In 2000 or 2001, UAB was in contention for the top spot (pre conference championship game) and was in 2nd place I believe. I personally heard Steve Earhardt on Memphis radio(where I guess he thought he was safe from UAB ears) say that being forced to take UAB as the CUSA champion would kill the Liberty Bowl because of attendance. Later that year, the language of the contract was changed to read that the Liberty Bowl had first CHOICE of CUSA teams rather than had to take the champion.

And furthermore, your scenario has been answered. The Liberty Bowl has now gotten out of the CUSA contract so they can take the 8th or 9th place SEC team, strictly for attendance

Nah. They'll keep adding bowls until everyone gets to go. Might be one you never heard of like the Pell City Bowl, but hey, it's a bowl game and that's all that counts, right.
