I have a question .... would it be feasible and desirable for the SEC/ACC to establish permanent cross conference rivals? A similar question has been discussed before in some SEC/ACC scheduling agreement threads. What I was wondering is if there would ever be a possibility of having selected ACC/SEC teams have one or two permanent cross over rivals? Obviously for Clemson, if this was to come to pass, I would want South Carolina and Georgia as permanent rivals. If not Georgia, then my next choice would be either Auburn or Texas A&M - we have recently had very interesting and exciting series with both of these teams. I think this might work if the NCAA allows conferences to go divisionless and assuming an 8 game conference schedule. I doubt all of the SEC or ACC teams would opt for this as I would think this would work only for teams where a compelling rivalry (ie strong regional or national interest) would be created. Some of the potential interesting rivals I thought of would be:
  • Georgia / Clemson
  • South Carolina / UNC
  • Va Tech / Bama
  • Va Tech / Tenn
  • Auburn / Ga Tech
  • FSU / Bama
  • FSU / A&M
  • Miami / LSU
  • Bama / Miami

This would guarantee one or two good OOC games every year and still allow for some scheduling flexibility (ie guaranteed 7 home games). Initially, the SEC/ACC permanent rival plan could be tried on a four year basis to see if it works - if so keep it and if not, scrap it.

I really like the idea, but for at least 2 ACC schools and 1 SEC school there would have to be 2 games. I would also expand it for the ACC so that your Northern half would swap with the Big 10 and the SEC's Western half with the Big 12.

Kentucky/Louisville
Florida/Florida State
Florida/Miami
South Carolina/Clemson
Georgia/Clemson
Georgia/Georgia Tech
Auburn/Georgia Tech
Tennessee/North Carolina
Vanderbilt/Wake Forest

Alabama/Oklahoma
L.S.U./Baylor
Arkansas/Kansas State
Texas A&M/Texas
Missouri/Kansas
Mississippi State/Texas Tech
Mississippi/Oklahoma State

Syracuse/Michigan State
Pittsburgh/Penn State
Boston College/Rutgers
Virginia/Maryland
Duke/Northwestern
Virginia Tech/Ohio State
N.C. State/Indiana
Notre Dame/Purdue

But you do realize that Alabama would rather claim Duke as a permanent crossover rival than to play Oklahoma annually?
I'd want VT for A&M, they're our brother from another mother.

If not the Hokies then one of our other brother schools like Clemson or Georgia Tech
Arkansas should play Oklahoma. We practically play them in everything else every year.
