I heard an interview in January with Danny Manning. He said that he scheduled his OOC schedule very tough for his players knowing they would take several losses because he felt that there was no way a CUSA team would get an at large bid, and he scheduled to get his team ready for the conference tournament. He felt winning the CUSA tournament was the only way to get to get in.

They started the season 1-6.

They just won the CUSA tournament and a trip to the NCAA 69-60

At first I thought he was wrong and looking at iCUSA from an elite point of view. I still don't agree, but hard to argue with results
You can still get an at large in CUSA. USM and La Tech were VERY close to getting one. We got one in a bad CUSA a few years back.
I agree but his strategy worked

And it hasn't been proven in this CUSA
So we were able to beat three NCAA tournament teams then (UNC, Nebraska, Tulsa)

Thanks for ruining our season again, FN Jeff Lebo.
Do you think Manning might be on the AU short list?
Not if he's got any sense.
A school can fire a coach anytime, but it must wait to hire a replacement until after the season is over for that sport. When is the date for signing college coaches in basketball? Is it after the end game of the "Final Four" or can it be after a target coach's team is no longer playing? This morning (SUN. 3/16) CH 13 Sports said AU might hire Bruce Pearl as soon as early this coming week. If true, is it because he is presently outside the NCAA structure ?

Every year it seems that a new "hot young coach" leads his unknown team to unexpected wins in the NCAA Tournament and becomes a hot commodity for the power conferences . Bruce Pearl became known when Wis. Green Bay had a run and Coach Smart at VCU did the same. Who will be the "Cinderella coach" this year?
I hear SMUs coach is a hot young stud fresh on the coaching scene. He did take SMU from bottom dweller and after thought to contender nearly overnight.

Yeah he is but if he plays his cards right I could see him coaching the New York Knicks one day. Who wouldnt want that job!?
Oh, I dunno, anyone with a brain? It's arguably worse than the AU job.

Money is the only reason to subject yourself to either.

is this a new rule?

I don't know that it is a specific NCAA rule (old or new) or just "tradition", but that has been the practice in the two major men's sports for many years. I would suppose its purpose is to keep bigger schools from raiding the lesser schools during their playoffs/tournaments. After the season, the coaching carousel can really take off. So far, I hear that nationally, over a dozen men's BB coaches have been fired but none have been hired-yet.

you missed the joke. larry coached the nicks for one year 05-06. one of his 9 nba head coaching jobs. dude has been a head coach for 13 different teams if you include the aba, nba, and ncaa.

No, just etiquette.

Oh, I got that part. I'm old enough to be well aware of Larry Brown's well-travelled coaching career. I just took the question semi-seriously. The Knicks *still* have not recovered from Isiah Thomas, and he's been gone for years now. The franchise is a disaster, although if Phil Jackson is as good in the front office as he was coaching they've made a fabulous hire.

BTW, the Piston's retarded absentee owner may actually be stupid enough to hire Thomas to replace Joe Dumars. How that man gets another front office job of any sort is completely beyond me.
So Manning scheduling really really tough out-of-conference games to be sure his team was ready for the juggernaut that is C-USA basketball this year?
He said he scheduled tough to have them ready for tournament play

Not really. In spite of excellent overall records (27-6 and 27-7) and co-conference champions at 13-3, they only got a 3-seed in the NIT. It will take a 30-win season in this C-USA to get an at-large.

Yeah if you play a crappy OOC schedule along with the crappy CUSA schedule.
I think we could've been the conversation if we just avoided all the bad losses. I also think next year's OOC schedule will be strong with the three Battle for Atlantis games, @UNC, and LSU. Plus, that's before we add any other games.
