...More surprised GM quit rather than was fired
...How bad a hire was this? Struggled badly, alienated people, was promised things that weren't delivered, disappointed many people

...recruits looking around; good offense coming back, but new qb; d needs work;not barren

Watts out of country??? In this day & age of email, cell phones, internet, twitter shouldn't hold anything up.

In modern times with technology, I seriously doubt it is necessary that Watts even have to meet face to face. Ideally, yes, but he can get an impression of the type of coach without that.

I think definitely by next Saturday a coach will be named for UAB. I think for our sake that NEEDS to be the case.

I imagine a courtesy phone call regarding parameters and the type of coach has been made and things are moving quickly behind the scenes. I also imagine UAB may have to pay more than they really want to at this stage...

"was promised things that weren't delivered" struck a familiar note. It was suggested earlier that one possible reason UAB was so tolerant of Watson Brown's record was that he was probably "promised things (like facilities) that were never delivered". It could be that UAB made similar promises to McGee but facilities remained "in planning" with no prospect of exactly when they would be built. Perhaps they will be built for the next coach (just as the weight room in Bell was ready in time for Callaway), or (alas) the one after that.

Other than that, some elements of what he said could have been copied from those impulsive early statements by McGee about "winning with the facilities and the players we already have". He put the best "face" possible on a difficult and immediately pressing situation.

B'ham, as the center of the largest populated metro area in the state, is indeed a "gold mine" if the school can ever raise the funding to mine the gold therein. That fieldhouse and respectable all-weather practice field are things most of our competitors already take for granted.

I doubt that we will hear anything about coaches who don't come to at least be interviewed but I expect we will have someone in place by this time next week or we will surely have a serious problem.

Yes. I remember that. I wrote it. I think it was yesterday actually. My point is that the big money should only be spent on a coach if it can be done in conjunction with facilities upgrades. I wasn't planning on having to explain that. I thought it was a given.

The point that people are trying to make to you is that we don't have $EC dollars coming in. If we pay a coach big money, then something else we want to do gets somewhere between less and much less. Start with if we pay a head coach 800-900k, then we have to find the payroll to pay comparably priced assistants that he wants to hire, or he has to hire bargain basement assistants and he starts out handicapped and pissed off.

It's all connected. It's hard to raise money and sell seats for football if you win three or four games per season. It's hard to get the big money donors, what few of them that we have, to cough up yet again when they have seen little progress from the last time(s) they donated. It's hard to recruit when you have crappy facilities, and if you don't recruit well it's hard to win so that you can get more butts in seats and more money coming in.

Add in that we don't have a BoT whose objective is to do everything that they can to assist in growing and improving the program, who arguably have actively acted to hamstring our progress, and it gets very friggin' hard to win (or be a fan) at UAB.

Yes, I'm painfully aware of all of this. There is an argument for splurging on coaching staff and hoping support for the program builds so we can pay for facilities later. It's certainly a strategy we haven't tried before. The business model we have now is not sustainable.

It would be much easier to have this discussion if anyone knew how much money we actually have.

A long time ago, a magazine did an article titled "What does it mean to be rich?" One they interviewed was Nelson Rockefeller, then Vice President. The quote that I best remember was his statement (that applies to UAB football) "Being rich means that when you want to buy something, you never have to wonder what you will have to give up to afford to buy it".

Bama's program is rich - UAB's program is not. That is why what we (UAB) want to pay a FBHC has to be balanced against what else we want / need to do with our available funds.

Remember too that whatever we want to do, no matter what a good hire it is, will have to be approved by the BoT.

Pat Sullivan and Jimbo Fisher ring any bells? Both were done deals, and we wound up with Neal Callaway stuffed down our throats.
