Full Version: I'd like to see UT do this

I just visited the Salukis' website to read about Southern's win over Ball State and saw a story about SIU's All-Century team in basketball, as they're celebrating 100 years of basketball in Carbondale. Turns out the Rockets are coming up on their 100th year of basketball: according to the media guide, UT is in its 99th year. I think this is an idea UT should "borrow". Let fans vote, or have local media choose the team: either way, or have a combination of the two. But it seems like a good way to commemorate the history of UT basketball.

Chuckovits, Gerber, Jones, Mix, Kozelko, Swaney, Miller, Knuckles, Lehman, Selgo, Joplin, Stempin (no, that's not a complete list and it's also true that some of those guys might not make it) but you get the idea.

UT can do the same for football a few years from now.

If you're interested, here's a link to the Saluki all-century team.

I agree! Awesome idea. Get in with some marketing people...?
I don't know who the marketing people are in the athletic department: I knew some people about 30 years ago, but I've been out of Toledo for a long time. I could probably figure it out if I searched through the staff on the UT site, but I'm probably not the best person to get in touch with the marketing people if this is a good idea.
Great idea and all to often Ken Epperson is overlooked as one of the greatest Rocket roundballers ever. He is our all time men's leader in both points scored (2,016) AND rebounds (960). His jersey should be hanging from the rafters. I think it would be impossible to find another college player who shares this distinction and their university has not honored them. I know you can argue that he had four years of eligibility but many other very good players have come and gone since who have not even come close to his numbers.
Good points about Epperson.
I agree and they should do it for men and women. It would be really fun and interesting to look back.
yep, Epperson was almost always the best player on the court. played toward the end of the Nichols yrs when we were still good but not getn to the ncaas
I always hated Sonnenberg and Adamek. So they should certainly be included.

Well, he played long enough to have 66 career blocked shots.

But sadly, I learned that he passed away suddenly in 2002 at the age 39.

I mainly hated him for going to Toledo instead of BG. 03-wink
This is a great idea, cyn...would be great to have Max Gerber's take as well...he was around for at least 3 decades of hoops and would be a great resource. Definitely agree with a combo of fans and press choosing. Could be a long term deal that could lead up to a great season of memories. Ditto on the Ken Epperson jersey idea. He was the man in his day for sure.
Max is a great choice for someone to be involved in this. I'm hoping someone from UT is lurking here or hears about this idea somehow and it least gets discussed as a possibility. Or maybe there's some other way to commemorate what will be the 100th year of UT basketball in 2014 (assuming what I saw in the media guide is correct).

The recent passing of Dick Miller and Ray Wolford got me thinking about this idea of somehow commemorating the 100th year of Toledo basketball (I still like the all-century team idea).

While originally I wasn't planning on contacting anyone at UT with this suggestion, I'm reconsidering that. Looking at the staff directory on the UT site, I'm thinking the contact person would be Steve Easton, the associate director of communications. He's identified as the contact for men's basketball. Anyone know if that's right or have another suggestion? Thanks.

Thanks.

I started this thread months ago but had forgotten about it until this morning, when I saw the story on the UT site about the poster commemorating the 500th win in football. Apparently (if I read last year's men's basketball guide correctly) the 2013-14 season was the 99th in UT history. So obviously, that would make 2014-15 the 100th season in Rocket history. I was thinking UT should do something to recognize the century season. This morning I finally got around to emailing the athletic department to see if there were any plans in the works. Apparently they aren't doing anything during the upcoming season: the recognition of this anniversary will take place after the season has ended. Below you'll see the email I wrote, followed by the response I got from Steve Easton. I contacted him, having forgotten that DetroitRocket suggest I contact Paul Helgren.

My email

I am a 1981 graduate of the University of Toledo. Earlier this year I was reading the 2013-14 Men's Basketball Information Guide and noticed that the 2013-14 season was the 99th in UT history, obviously making 2014-15 the 100th season in the history of men’s basketball for The University of Toledo. I was wondering if there were any special celebrations planned for the upcoming season, such as a reunion of former players, coaches and other personnel, selection of an All-Century team or anything along those lines. As you well know, there is much to celebrate in the history of Rocket basketball and I believe the 100th season would be a good time to recognize these accomplishments.

I’d appreciate it if you could let me know if there are any plans to recognize a century of men’s basketball at Toledo. Thank you for your time.

Response from Steve Easton:

We are planning to celebrate the 100 years of basketball next year once this season is over. It would include many of the ideas that you’ve mentioned.

If you have any additional questions please let me know.
