You will find a similar conversation somewher between 2 and 25 pages back on this thread, as well.

I don't like the idea. But unlike what's been discussed, is there a way for ECU to be called Carolina University but keep East in the official name? That may be more suitable for fans... it's an easy transition. We are still East Carolina University, just marketed as Carolina University. on ESPN and sports websites listed as Carolina U. We don't even have to change the fight song...

Examples:
Louisiana State University and agricultural and mechanical college - more commonly known as LSU or Louisiana State
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Or Rutgers
North Carolina State University at Raleigh, or NC state.

The problem is they drop the end of their names, not the beginning.

The only examples I can think of even close is:

California State university, Fresno - or Fresno State

I hate to bump to say something stupid but, I've always thought the most badass school name is Sewanee: The University of the South. How about some shape or form of East Carolina: The University of the Carolinas. The "Carolinas" may be redundant.

I'm not sure that would work. I really ECU is more hampered by a crowded market than any other factor.

Idk... we've easily got our share in NC. Probably a higher percentage of our state than any other G5 school. We really need to expand beyond the VA/NC/SC area...

But ECU's share is divided by 5. I know ad execs have access to reams of data, but I also believe they do a great deal of spit-balling as well. Does ECU outdraw Duke and Wake in viewership? Probably, but clearly that never mattered to the BEast.

What they saw was a state with 4 FBS teams and a population of 9-10 million people. With regard to CFB, no team in the Tarheel State can claim to have the critical mass of viewership. The population is too diffused across the state and the fandoms are too board.

Wake and Duke veiwership is pretty much nil. Wake would be lucky to be fbs ifnit wasnt for the ACC. Duke fans dont show til Bball season as most of them pull for someone else in fb. NC fb has always been Unc, State and ECU and our rating when on similar platforms prove it. You are right about the BE, but their methods and practices were flawed. Basketball first, large metro areas (even if the school didnt deliver) serving the C7. Some of the worst leadership ive seen.
There is only one true Carolina and that is East Carolina!

Go Carolina Pirates!
I am amazed that this thread is still alive. The only university in the state of NC that is watched more than ECU for football is UNC. More people watch ECU football than NC State. You will be surprised how many people from other schools watch ECU play football if it is indeed eyeballs you are looking for.

There is a good selection of football talent here, but this is a basketball recruiting bastion. Some of the best basketball recruits in the country live in Eastern North Carolina.

As I thought about it more, I am not sure that I would want to be in an expanded SEC. The best we could possibly hope for is 6-6 or 7-5 if we win all our non-conference games. Not saying that we could not be a power at some point as it would become a more attractive job if we were in the SEC. Right now, I don't think we can compete on that level. In time maybe. I would not turn an offer to join down though.

I feel the same way about the Memphis going to the SEC talk that used to go on where I live all the time.In football, what kind of expectations of success could you ever hope to have?Eventually,I think the Tigers will compete in the American but I can't can't see an successful future in the SEC.I know it gets tiresome for Tiger fans who live in Memphis to hear all the SEC fans talk about their schools but I think the American Conference can be a good league & I look forward to ECU rejoining us.
ECU will learn a lot about how competitive they could be in the SEC when they go on the road to Columbia & face the Gamecocks in the second week of the season this year. Both teams could be ranked & I think an experienced Pirate team could give USC fits as it's an early season game & they are replacing some key pieces. Also, I believe that ECU has beaten the Gamecocks 4 out of the last 6 in Columbia.
Now ECU is gonna go down to Gainesville in 2015 to try and show the SEC 1st hand what kinda football pedigree the Pirates have. Only played @ Florida once before in 1983, a 24-17 victory for the #6 ranked Gators over an ECU team that finished the season ranked #20. That '83 Florida team actually beat the eventual national champion Miami 28-3 earlier that season.

I remember Duke coming to Florida State for a football game and didn't even bring the band. Pitiful.

I completely forgot about this...I came across this the other day.

"For the 2009 and 2010 season in the Raleigh/Durham area. UNC had 7.7 rating. ECU a 7.4 rating and NC State 6.6 rating."

"Charlotte, NC metro market ESPN/ESPN 2 Ratings for the 2009 and the 2010 Season is as follows. The ratings for NC State 4.0, ECU 5.4, and UNC 5.7." http://www.ecu.edu/undaunted

Duke and Wake do considerably worse than all three unless playing in state.
ECU Pirate plunders ESPN!

Hell, might as well bump this old thread. It's the off season.

I got a good laugh out of this...whoever made this obviously isn't from America. NO USC fans consider this a rivalry. I know one USC fan that posts on another message board that really, really hates ECU for whatever reason but that's about it. And a few hardcore old timers that remember us winning several games in the 90's (I mean, we do have five of the last 9 03-wink).

Also ESPN has it as the #1 road trip of week 2...even though the competition sucks.

“Playing East Carolina is a lot tougher game than maybe picking up one of those bottom Big Ten teams, and a lot of fans around here would rather see a team that’s close by.” - Spurrier

Poll below: Who would you rather watch SC play? ECU or bottom tier B1G team?

Yeah, I voted for ECU in the other thread. This may or may not be a novel concept but I think that East Carolina should lead a secession from the state of North Carolina and make sure it includes the coast. Then you establish the state of East Carolina and become its flagship. Then the SEC would have no qualms over taking "The" University of East Carolina and you would be nobody's little brother. N.C. State then becomes everybody's little brother. You would enhance your new state funding from all the tourism and industry located near the coast and would become truly an SEC state and your more conservative politics would be reflected by the population base. The liberals in the research triangle could then unabashedly ruin what is left of North Carolina and nobody in the East would have to worry about it.

Also an added perk would be in reducing the market size of North Carolina while leaving it with two state universities to support would lessen their marketable value while increasing that of E.C.U.. Just think you could flip the tables in one deft political maneuver.
The reason why this country is being ruined JR is because of Open Trade agreements. Those were originally fashioned by conservatives. By all means though, continue with your revisionistic theories. Personally, I wish all extreme conservatives and extreme liberals could just be shipped away from this country so that the rest of us that actually can work together could make it America again.

That is very unlikely to ever happen though.
Any ECU fans out there coming to Columbia for the game this season?
I wish I could make the trip to Columbia but ill have to settle for TV. I would love to experience a game in an SEC Stadium. Im gonna try and save up enough money to go to Gainesville to see us play Florida next year. I know we will have fans there, probably in the 3-5000 range. Im sorry about the tough loss to start the season against A & M? How much do you think your defense can improve against us since we run a similar offense? We will see how we play tomorrow, but im expecting to play well. If any **** fans want to watch its on ESPN News at 8 pm. We may not have the Stars that A&M has but we have some talented playmakers. WR is our deepest position and we have a senior QB who completed 70% of his passes last year.

I admire almost all of you ECU fans. You have moxie. You love your school, and I hope you do make it into a P5 conference. I do think you would have had a easier time against Spurrier if A&M hadn't embarrassed him though. Good luck on your season. JR
Was going to go to the USC game but I got tricked into a bachelor party that weekend. --Yeah, and the wife planned the wedding for our homecoming. So now I'm down a home game and a road game. Will see us play Temple in Philly though.

Also, I wouldn't mind if ENC split from the rest of the state. They dog us as it is, I'm sick of their crap. Bunch of losers talk about how awesome it is to be in the Piedmont and then spend every waking vacation hour trashing the beaches we call home....all while throwing insults to the way of life in the east. I imagine it's how people from ATL treat and talk to the rest of Georgia.
