they keep on showing the clowney hit like it was illegal.

that was a legal football play.

The SC hit on UAB's WR last season however was not.

The next generation of players will learn that you put your hat on the ball and the ball will fall out. Those helmet hits are unsportsmanlike.

The point being that Clowney's hit would be illegal under the new rules. He could even be ejected.
Pffft. I remember Jack Tatum.

Too-Tall Jones used to tape dimes to his fingertips so that his head slap would resonate better on a helmet.

Love it!
While I'm all for protecting players this is potentially the dumbest rule in the history of football. So an official is supposed to make an on the fly call that could get a guy ejected even if the opponent lowers his shoulders? Or go to the replay then throw him out? There's no onus on the other guy to give him an open target, is supposed to just not hit him?

I'm beginning to think JoePa was right. You wanna reduce head injuries, take away helmets.
To me the Clowney hit was just a good solid hit by a player in the right place at the right time after missed assignment by Mich lineman that just looks worse due to the Mich player didn't have his helmet fully strapped but shouldn't be illegal. The Aub player who decked his teammate in spring game is a prime example of what should be illegal.
If you watch the Clowney play, you will see a lineman who comes out of his stance and never stands straight up, so his helmet is always in front of his body. As a lineman, you are taught to stay low and never stand up. You can't penalize someone for being good and too fast for the play the offense ran. It's not his fault no one blocked him, and he hit the running back like a missile.
