UAB announces co-chairs, theme for its largest-ever fundraising campaign
http://www.uab.edu/news/latest/item/3601...g-campaign
I suspect this wont just be the largest in UAB history but the largest in state history.

Can't wait to see the goal and all of the publicity build up before and during the campaign.

It's an exciting time to be associated with UAB and hopefully our alumni will step up to the plate.
This is great! Seems like they are focusing on the research and hospital side, but did mention the 5 year capital project.
Well, let's light this firecracker!
Get your checkbooks ready. They will be calling soon

The better we make UAB as a hospital, school, research institution, the more appeal we have to students, prospective athletes, coaches/faculty, etc.

Even without a specific focus on athletics, this campaign will be huge for the future of UAB overall and therefore UAB athletics.
What an exciting time for the university and the city. It feels like we are making strides in all areas and that the people in charge are committed to making UAB a household name in every way possible...can't wait to see what happens with this!

I feel like athletics was strategically veiled in their statement. It's probably not high on the list, but just the fact that it could be on the list at all will be a good thing.
This is what we need!
I think I read in an AL.com comments section that things are changing too fast downtown and that UAB is undertaking more than it should right now...

I laughed rather hard at the joke. I just hate that he didn't include the sarcasm font.
From what I've heard this campaign will have a goal of $1B

Dang! Could there be an extra 65 million for a stadium the band could practice in during the fall season, particularly on Saturdays.
It'll be over a multi year period, but still. This will be a massive undertaking.

Got an email from Ray L. Watts, MD last night.

As did I
This is actually more directly important for athletics than most fans realize. Two thirds of our current funding for athletics comes from the indirect (overhead) funds generated by research dollars.

However remember that the giver within restraints can designate where his money will be used. You may be able to designate say athletic scholarship funding.

PS What is mentioned is the 5-year strategic plan - not capital project plan.

A strategic plan will typically be more about attracting researchers with seed/grant money who will bring in more research dollars future. The limited facilities built will tend to focus on what is needed to attract and support them such as new labs space, that may or may not require new buildings.

With Whit having input, I wonder if we will raise scholarship for undergraduates. At UAT this is one of the devices used to raise the numbers and raise their academics at same time. "Buying" students is usually a device or private - not public ones

Seriously? "too fast?" Really? First they were complaining that things were moving "too slow", now they're going "too fast?" Some people are just plain..."Walkers"...That's all there is to it...
I think Mike Warren used to be Mayor of New York and hired Michael J. Fox as his Deputy Mayor.

"It only takes a spark,
to get a fire going,
and soon all those around,
can warm up to its glowing..."

Seems rather apropos... UAB, blazers, ignition, higher education, etc...
That's how it is with God's love, once you've experienced it.
