Quote:The sound of gunfire is expected to echo across UAB's campus today as school, hospital, police and fire officials practice for an event they hope will never happen.

The emergency response preparedness drill will mimic an active shooter scenario at the school's Hill University Center. There will be SWAT teams, bomb squads and even actors appearing to have serious injuries.

Simulated gunshots will ring out about 1 p.m. Controlled chaos is expected to follow.
Last year they did this drill without notifying anyone. The only information that it was a drill was "DRILL" at the end of the emergency notifications that were going out and apparently quite a few people can't read and that wasn't enough. The media blitz they've done for this one is shock and awe. Maybe the athletics department should hire UAB Emergency Management for their marketing
And yet there will still be someone who freaks out.

BTW, oxymoron of the day, children, "controlled chaos".
Yeah, controlled chaos... It's really hard to simulate an event like this, because every person is likely going to respond in a different way if the event truly happens. Some people panic under pressure, while others thrive under it.

Truth.

I was once in an office where the 20 people assigned there had all received fire extinguisher training at the same time. Some months later, a small fire broke out, and three people (myself included) put the fire out, while seventeen people, well...

I participated in an active shooter drill last spring in Fairfield as a buddy of mine was interning with the UAB police dept and needed to volunteers. Scared the living crap out of me.
an an employee, I got an email about it a few days ago.
Sad that drills like this are even necessary
I got a memo at about 4:30pm on a Friday last year that a crew would be filming in our part of Uptown Charlotte that Sun and there would be car chases and simulated gunfire. Glad they got the memo out just in time (never found out what was being filmed, but [i]Homeland[/] films here and it's not unusual to come across one of their scenes so it may have been them).

This year, we got a notice that the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Co. PD would be conducting live fire exercises around Uptown one Sunday to calibrate their gunshot triangulation system (they can pinpoint the location of any gunfire in the city). Cool that we have that, but kind of ominous that it was needed.
"Yew pondexters done spearminted ahn mah goat fer thuh lass time! Roh Tahd!"
Sucks that frills like this need to be done but I'm glad they are doing them. Burying your head in the sand doesn't do **** to make you safer. It's our reality now.
