Very impressive and inspirational.
Hopefully she gets to play in the Big Dance and gets a shot at the WNBA.
Some of Hack's best work.
Hack and Ryan both had nice articles today in blade
It will be a very bittersweet day for Rocket fans Wednesday. I don't think Naama was the best ever but if I had to pick one player for a big game I'd think back to BG and CMU this year and especially Southern Cal in the WNIT final-absolute dominance when we needed it most. My daughter and I do the Michael Cooper eye popping thing with each other all the time: "She got FORTY"?" We're gonna miss Naama and Cree and Yo and Kyle and Ryley a lot.
Great article Hack

I'm interested in knowing who you think was the best player to don a midnight blue and gold uniform, if not Naama?

Women's? Kim Knuth. Naama is a close second. But, I never saw Dana Drew play in person
Credit has to also go to Coach Cullop for taking a big chance with Naama. If Naama was not the quality individual that she is, there could have been a lot of resentment from the other players because she was treated "special." In reality, Coach Cullop is probably the only US big school Coach that was willing to risk her reputation and maybe her career on Naama. Hats off to both these fine ladies.

Knuth and its not that close. Probably best in MAC history. Janickki is second only because I know her and am afraid of her. Actually I'll call Drew second then upikxem--
Naama, Drake, and a few others.

Kim Knuth.
If you never saw Knuth, Drew, Olson, and Drake play together, you missed the best team the MAC ever produced. No one else is even close. IMHO. Right, Fred?
I would echo Kim Knuth as my pick for best all-time...almost unstoppable as a scorer and as tough a rebounder for her size as any.

Dana Drew was also a great 4-year player & leader who I recall taking games over at crucial times, whether with scoring, passing, defense, etc...

But there is no argument from me that Naama Shafir has meant the moon & the stars to this Rocket program for the past few years. I count myself very lucky that I have been able to see them and others (Kelly Savage, Angela Drake, Mimi Olson, and more) play in midnight blue & gold.

they should retire her jersey Wednesday, shes meant so much to the program both on and off the court

Yes!! We have been blessed with many special young women who also happened to be phenomenal basketball players.
What a great article!

I agree the Knuth was far and away the best ever. It's always been my opinion that she was the biggest recruiting coup for any Toledo sports team, ever. Even as a freshman, it seemed clear that she could have played for any school in the country. Drew was also a special player. Naama has surpassed some of Dana's records, but did it in a lot more games played.

Jeff, I was always partial to the 1996-97 team with Knuth, Mimi Olson, Kim D'Angelo, Angie Drake, and Kristen Tews. Four of them averaged in double figures during the season, and those four made it into the Hall of Fame.

Knuth was the best player ever to wear a Toledo uniform, and Dana Drew wasn't too far behind. But Naama is a special player in her own right. I will never ever forget her performance against USC in that WNIT final. It was just surreal in the best of ways.

She probably will still need her jersey next week and hopefully a while after that, being so modest and all 03-wink

well played
Naama and the WNIT will always be in any conversation involving the lore of UT-WBB but Kim Knuth was in an entirely different universe by herself. 1st team MAC 3 years, MAC player of the year twice, went to 3 NCAA tourneys, scored over 2500 points and equally remarkable graduated with a GPA somewhere in the 3.9+ region with a major in Chemical Engineering.
