As recently posted on the Rocket Report forum, Toledo DT commit and undefeated (33-0) wrestler, Marquis Moore (Toledo Whitmer), just won Districts! The state tournament begins on 2/28 where he is paired up against Stefano Millin from Massillon Perry (33-11). What Marquis has done to date is a tremendous feat in-of-itself. Let's pull for him to finish out his HS wrestling career undefeated!

Good Luck, Marquis!!! Bring home a State Championship. I like the idea of a Rocket DT being an outstanding wrestler.
Well - he's on the right side of the brackets to have a shot. Two other undefeated heavyweights will meet in the lower half of the bracket - Gutapfel from Harrison High is 46-0 and ranked #1 in the state. He will face Travis Gusan from Hilliard Davidson (who is also 46-0 and ranked #2) in the semi-finals - assuming they win their first 2 matches.

Moore is ranked 12th and the first match against Milano (who is 33-11) will be telling. If he wins that - and then if he can manage to get by Ameer Daniels from Cinci Northwest (who is 39-2 and ranked 4th) then I think he makes it to the finals. He has wrestled well, but he needs to be smart. He has huge bursts of strength, but if he doesn't get a pin early, then he can get gassed by the third period. His technique is also not as sound as guys that wrestle year round.

Tough road ahead, but we'll see if he can bring the heavyweight glory back to Toledo.
Great insights from our resident wrestling expert. If I understand the schedule correctly, Div I action begins at 5:45 this afternoon.

Hopefully they update the RESULTS page in a timely manner.
Marquis Moore wins and advances!

Good news for Moore is that Ameer Daniels was upset in the first round, so Moore gets a better match-up for the next round to hopefully advance to semi's. Moore won his first match in OT on Sudden Victory by a score of 3-1 (ie 1st OT period - so he must have gotten a take down to end the match). He'll have to step it up but maybe the stars are aligning...
Good luck to him!
Div I quarterfinals are scheduled to get underway at 11:20a Friday.

This pdf shows the BRACKETS. You have to scroll to the bottom for the 285lb weight class. (the website states that they will update these during the tournament)
It seems he advanced to the semi's with a 4-3 victory. Next match is against Siegfried from Canton Glen Oak.

Thanks for the update! It looks like the other side of the brackets played out just the way MotoRocket said it should. Gutapfel (46-0) vs Gusan (46-0) for the semi.

Hopefully Marquise got through without hurting anything because he's going to wrestle again today. Div I semi's begin at 6:30p tonight.

Hopefully the heavyweight final tomorrow will include two undefeated wrestlers.
I like his chances tonight to get into the finals. Winning close matches is always good for the mental side of things. Now it is as much mental as physical.

Other local kids advancing to the semis in D-I : Trey Grine (Fremont Ross Jr. at 145); Richie Screptock (Oregon Clay Soph at 120); Nick Stencil (Oregon Clay Jr. at 160); J.P. Newton (P'burg Jr at 152)

Alex Mossing (Jr from Toledo Central Catholic) was picked to win the D-II at 138 and is into the semi-finals that have just started. It actually looks like the Toledo area wrestling is picking up nicely.
Moore lost a disappointing match by a score of 2-1. All of the area kids I listed above lost in the semi-finals. No Toledo area wrestlers going to the finals in D-1.
Yeah, just saw it.

OK--time to focus on FOOTBALL!!!

GO MARQUISE! GO ROCKETS!
D-2 Central Catholic has Alex Mossing (Jr. at 138#) taking on Ryan Skonieczny whom he has beaten several times already this year. It would be another disappointment if the Toledo kid loses after winning about 4 straight over his opponent.

Delta has about 3-4 kids in the finals tomorrow in D-3.

Whitmer's Marquise Moore was assessed a penalty point for not removing his hair tie from his wrist, and lost 2-1 in the state semifinals.

If that is true that is terrible officiating and I speak from a 10+ year experience of officiating high school to Division 1 baseball and football. Its about knowing the situation. You dont pull that crap in a state semi final match.
Aw, man, the kid must be kicking himself over that! But, where were the coaches? You would think somebody else on his sideline should have known the rules and caught that. That is sad.

Pappylizard, what if somebody on the opposing side noticed it and raised the issue? The official would be behooved to call it wouldn't he?

No doubt... You just hope though that there was some preventative officiating going on. I know we don't know the whole story but I have seen too many examples in my lifetime where the high school official wants to be the one impacting the contest. I'm sure it was well officiated but you just hate to see the non athletic side of things b th deciding factor. Onwards and upwards.
