Every player on his team plays defense on every possession. They seem to be improving each game as he implements a new system.
I wish UAB would play with the same type of intensity. Southern Miss is in your face for 40 minutes. They play up tempo on offense which is a change from their prior coach. However, defense is their motto.
UAB needs a defensive presense to go with the new up tempo offense.

I had watched Southern Miss play prior to Christmas against Georgia. They won that game on the road against a mediocre Georgia team. I had not seen them play again until the UAB game on Saturday. They were much improved and were in our face all game long. I was impressed with their play and coaching of Donnie Tyndall.

What is your point? You are comparing apples to sour grapes.

I was also impressed with So Miss. How'd they get so good so fast?

Gotta be cheating. Right? (JK, I think)

Defensive intensity of that nature does require a deep bench. Fatigue is usually at the heart of our defensive lapses.
UAB is playing too soft defensively. Our coach has not made in game adjustments since C-USA has started. We do not appear to be getting better. Our lack of depth is a big factor and we can not defend the basket. We have very little post play and our opponents are always shooting wide open shots.
My point is I am impressed with the Southern Miss coach and his team. He has a small team that plays defense on every possession. I'm not sure why this ticks off UAB folks. Just noting what I am watching.
I'm at every UAB home game and will continue to support the team win or lose. What a poor turnout last night especially from our students. We need to at least show some improvement towards the end of the year.
Most of our players played hard last night. Not a great defensive performance to say the least.
you can't play four corners with 7 players
One thing i noticed last night is when ECU went inside it was usually two points. Our interior defense was horrible
Isn't it also true that a faster tempo makes it tougher to get set defensively? Mike Davis' slow style made defensive positioning easier and more straightforward. Without a deep bench and in a new faster scheme, we have more defensive lapses.
The new usm coach took over a much better situation
how many returning players do they have from last season's roster? I know the UK transfer is gone, but you got to remember USM was just as good last year if not better
The next time I care about USM basketball will be the first time.

Their program does not relate to mine in any way.

it's about time USM did something in hoops but the season isn't over, they still have time to fade away...

Except that they are in the same division and we play them twice each year, three times if you count the tournament. I have never understood the Southern Miss hate. Most of the fans were great to me at the game.

Their venue is really cool too. The turnout and school spirit were really impressive. And I was mesmerized by the r/c blimp. They've got a good thing going.
And the one guy that teased me a little was nowhere near as awful as our own fans were to the Memphis fans this year before the game, including families with small children. I thought that was pretty stupid.
Maybe this is the year that USM makes the NCAA Mens Basketball tourney for the 4th time. Maybe this is the year they will win their 1st game in the tourney.
Tyndall also didn't have to recruit with major sanctions in place.

BTW largest crowd I have ever seen for a basketball game there. 5,800. We need them to be a good team with a good RPI. UAB and USM need to be the kingpins in this league.

And ODU and MTSU and Charlotte and Marshall and UTEP and Tulsa. We need a strong, strong top half of the league so we don't have to count on winning the conference tournament to make the tourney. Unfortunately, there is some dead weight coming in basketball wise.
Donnie Tyndall is a good coach.

UAB has a short bench.

I'm sure of those two things, but they aren't related.

USM lost two starters from last year. They both transferred and because of family situations got to play right away. One is the leading scorer for South Carolina(Page) and the other is a starter for Penn State(Newbill). If those two had stayed who knows how good we would have been.

This USM team was tied for last in the country in experience when the season began. USM managed to hire the worst head football coach available and just might have actually hired the best basketball coach available. He has three transfers sitting out this year and two of them are better than anyone on this team this year. Look for Tyndall to get a huge raise. Money is already being donated for that purpose. He is also a humble and great guy. Have shared a beer or two with him. For what its worth he does not want USM to got to the NBE if a chance comes. He likes the new CUSA for basketball.

Interesting, especially the part about basketball in the new C-USA.
