I just wish they were UAB fans.

A lot of them will be...as soon as we start winning!
I know many non UAB fans who will watch UAB on TV if their team is not playing. I think UAB is one of the most underrated TV draws in the conference. Birmingham fans love their football, put us on, they will tune in... (if their team is not playing also)
Any questions now as to why ESPN would put a crap bowl in Birmingham?
I was working at Mugshots when UAB was playing Ohio State - for some reason we subscribed to the Big Ten network - and the entire place was transfixed. Especially early when we were winning. Some people were really getting into it too. We have a lot of potential for TV viewership, especially if we manage to work our way onto less obscure channels.
ESPN produces the bowl game in Birmingham because they have a long-standing relationship with the people who get things done here. They have confidence in those local people running a good show for the participating teams and they have a good time slot when no other college teams are playing and early in the day before the NFL WIldCard games get started..... and it is profitable for them.
...and I totally agree with the Dragon. There a lot of people in Birmingham who would have no problem being UAB fans if we would start winning. those viewership numbers show people here LOVE good college football. Over the past several seasons, we have NOT been delivering.

As we have noted many, many times over the years, WINNING is the only marketing strategy UAB has never been able to try. Perhaps 2013 will be that year for the new strategy?
So if the original theory that TV market is what matters then we should be expecting an invite from each of the Big 5 conferences... 05-stirthepot
uab was getting some love from ESPN in basketball and to a lessor extent football. then we dumped espn when moon rigged the contract bidding and espn put uab on the ignore list.
How did UAB dump ESPN when the conference negotiates the TV contract.

Despite what you want to believe, Birmingham being #1 has nothing to do with UAB.
