Arialle Hess has always been a leader, whether she intended to or not. A naturally gifted athlete in many areas, Hess didn't have to push herself to her limits both mentally and physically like others, but she did anyway to set an example.

"Arialle's leadership abilities extend way beyond the field," Hess' high school coach Donna Hibshman said. "She was always the pace-setter in anything we did as a team, and if when she finished, she would go back and encourage her teammates the rest of the way. That's who Arialle is, she's always been a lead by example type of person."

Hess is trying to take her leadership to the next level to help VCU Field Hockey reach new heights in her final season with the Rams this fall

[Image: AppStateWin-Main.jpg?max_width=730&a...;crop=true]
HOW IT HAPPENED:

•Appalachian State came out firing, scoring just 3:54 into the game when Jessi Stuart found the back of the cage.
•Senior Kelsey Scherrer nearly tied the game in the 23rd minute when she took a corner from Steph DeMasi and blasted a shot on target, but Mountaineer keeper Sarah Anderson turned her away.
•The Mountaineers extended their lead in the 26th minute when Dana Wetmore took a pass from Emily Knapp and found the back of the cage to put VCU in a 2-0 hole.
•Less than three minutes later, Scherrer got the Rams on the board with her fifth goal of the year.
•Freshman sensation Kendall Farino would send the Black & Gold into the halftime tied up when she scored for the second time in three games to even it up at 2-2.
•VCU came out aggressive in the second half with 12 shots in the first 15 minutes, but couldn't get anything past Anderson and the Mountaineer defense.
•Senior Meaghan Neylon changed that when she gathered a rebound off a shot from Scherrer and slid the ball past Anderson to give the Rams a 3-2 advantage.
•Just over three minutes later, classmate Melanie Marotta tallied her first goal of the year and it was a big one, giving the Black & Gold a 4-2 lead.
•Marotta's goal would prove crucial when App. State's Caroline Phillips made it a one-goal game in the 64th minute.
•VCU's midfield and backline secured the win, not allowing a shot in the last six minutes to secure the Rams' sixth straight victory.

RAMS MOVES TO 7-0 WITH DOMINATING 4-1 WIN AT TOWSON
[Image: TowsonFHWin-Main.jpg?max_width=730&a...;crop=true]

HOW IT HAPPENED:
•After two early corners for Towson, the Rams came alive quickly, netting the game's first goal in the eighth minute when seniors Melanie Marotta and Kelsey Scherrer set up classmate Meaghan Neylon off a corner for her third goal of the season.

•Scherrer got a goal for herself less than five minutes later when she dribbled through two defenders, into the circle and blast a shot to the right of the keeper to give VCU a 2-0 just 11:27 into the contest.

•The first half onslaught wasn't over as senior Arialle Hess sent home a pass from classmate Chelsea Hill in the 31st minute to give the Rams a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.

•The seniors would continue their strong day in the second half when Scherrer found the back of the cage for the second time off Marotta's second assist of the day.

•Towson did get on the board late when Caitie Barnwell found Courtney Branco for a goal with just over five minutes left.

•Redshirt junior Megan Botteri made sure that's all the Tigers would get on the day, registering seven saves on the day and lowering her GAA to 1.25, which ranks in the top-15 in the country.
[Image: DrexelLossFH2012-Main.jpg?max_width=730&...;crop=true]

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Drexel would start the game on the attack with four shots and three corners in the first 10 minutes, but redshirt junior Megan Boterri and the VCU defense kept them off the scoreboard.

But that's when the Rams took over with six corners and seven shots over the next 25 minutes, but the Dragons keeper, Jantien Gunter, was able to keep VCU out of the back of the cage and send the game into halftime at 0-0.

The Rams would come out firing in the second half with three shots and two corners in the first five minutes, but again, the Drexel backline was able to stifle any scoring chances.

Drexel's Elise Didonato finally broke the scoreless battle when she put home a goal in the 43rd minute to give the home squad a 1-0 lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, it looked like senior Kelsey Scherrer had evened the score off a penalty corner, but the refs waved the goal off because the shot was said to have been too high and therefore, the Dragons remained ahead, 1-0.

VCU would continue to own the tempo down the stretch, rifling off five shots in the final 15 minutes, but none found the back of the cage.

Senior Kelsey Scherrer added two goals and two assists in the victory.

[Image: UNCLoss093012-Main.jpg?max_width=730&...;crop=true]

HOW IT HAPPENED:

UNC came out firing with 11 shots in the first 15 minutes, but redshirt junior Megan Botteri was rock solid, tallying five saves and keeping the game scoreless entering the 20th minute.

VCU would light the scoreboard first with senior Kelsey Scherrer depositing a shot off an assists from sophomore Kendell Combs in the 21st minute to give the Rams a 1-0 cushion.

The second-ranked Tar Heels would respond with two goals before the break, taking a 2-1 advantage into halftime.

UNC would keep the pressure up in the second half, scoring four times on 11 second-half shots to pick up their 12th victory of the season.

Botteri was solid in cage all day for the Rams, registering a career-high 16 saves after facing a career-high 29 shots.

[Image: FH-TempleLoss100512-Main.jpg?max_width=8...height=450]

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Temple jumped right out of the gates with Nicole Kroener, the A-10 assist leader, finding Amber Youtz just inside the circle for the game's first goal, 5:37 into the match.

The rest of the half wouldn't see much action around the cage with both teams getting off just two more shots, both of VCU's being on target, but Temple keeper Lizzy Millen was able to turn both away.
The second half started much like the first ended with the midfield getting most of the action.

However, that all changed in the final 10 minutes, beginning with Temple firing off four shots in a two minute span, but VCU keeper Megan Botteri was able to keep it a one-goal game.
Botteri's work allowed the Rams offense to draw a penalty corner with 65:53 showing on the clock. The Black & Gold made it count with Steph DeMasi and Chelsea Hill setting up Kelsey Scherrer for her 11th goal of the year to even the score at 1-1 with under four minutes to play.

Heartbreak would strike when the Owls answered with a goal just over two minutes later (68:18) off the stick of Lauren Hunt. It would prove to be the decisive one as Temple held on for the 2-1 victory.

RAMS BOUNCE BACK FOR 2-1 WIN OVER LIBERTY
[Image: FH-LibertyWin-Main.jpg?max_width=800&...height=450]

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Senior Haley McBee didn't wait long to put pressure on the Flames, unleashing a near goal just 2:42 into the game, but Liberty keeper Mallory Cuccio came up with the save.

The Rams would strike first in the 15th minute when senior Meaghan Neylon fed a beautiful pass to sophomore Kendell Combs, who found the back of the cage for the first time this season to give VCU a 1-0 cushion.

The action would stay in the midfield until right before half when senior Kelsey Scherrer dribbled into the circle and rocketed a shot into the back of the cage to send the Rams into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Liberty would come out aggressive in the second half and found the back of the cage just seven minutes into the stanza with Hannah Doherty scoring her third goal of the year.

It looked like the Rams had put the nail in the coffin with just over five minutes left when Stephanie DeMasi tipped in a shot off a penalty corner, but it was called back with the ref saying the ball never left the circle.

VCU's midfield and defense would do their job the rest of the way, allowing just one Liberty shot in the final 25 minutes.

RAMS PLAY TOE-TO-TOE WITH 17TH-RANKED SPIDERS, BUT FALL 3-1 IN A-10 HOME OPENER
[Image: FH-RichmondLoss101212-Main.jpg?max_width...height=450]

IT HAPPENED:
The first half was full of plenty of corner opportunities, but nothing in the back of the cage as both teams stifled any possible scoring chance for each other's offensive attack.

The second half was much different with VCU pressuring the Spiders back line and drawing two corners in the first seven minutes of the second half.

VCU would capitalize on the second corner when senior Kelsey Scherrer was set up by classmate Chelsea Hill and junior Steph DeMasi for her 13th goal of the year, giving the Rams a 1-0 cushion.
Richmond would respond seven minutes later when Taylor Deitrick deflected in a pass from Rebecca Barry off a penalty corner to even the score at 1-1.

The teams would battle back-and-forth over the next 10 minutes before the Spiders drew a controversial penalty stroke in the 58th minute. Barry would convert on the stroke to give UR a 2-1 advantage.

Just over two minutes later, Barry struck again when she put home her second goal of the game off a rebound from a shot off the stick of Amy Cooke.

VCU would threaten with two more penalty corners, but the Spider back line was able to stifle any scoring opportunity and preserve the 3-1 lead.

RAMS FALL 3-0 TO RED-HOT UMASS SQUAD
[Image: FH-UMASSLoss101412-Main.jpg?max_width=80...height=450]

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Minutewomen came out aggressive, scoring just 4:40 into the contest when Kim Young found the back of the cage off through a scrum of players.

VCU would settle in and test the UMass defense throughout the first half, unleashing five shots on goal in the stanza.

With time winding down in the first half, the Rams nearly evened the score up with near goals from Kendell Combs, Haley McBee and Chelsea Hill, but the UMass defense was able to clear each of the opportunities to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.

Much like the first half, the Minutewomen got on the board early into the second half with Callie Sweigart scoring her first goal of the season just 9:06 after the intermission.

A back-and-forth pace of play would lend its way to another UMass goal with just under 10 minutes to play, with Alyssa Ineson tallying the goal off an assist from Renee Suter.

VCU tried to build a late rally, but the Minutewomen were able to stifle any scoring chance and preserve the 3-0 win for the home team.

RAMS PICK UP 10TH WIN OF THE YEAR IN 1-0 DEFEAT OF LOCK HAVEN
[Image: FH-LockHavenWin101912-Main.jpg?max_width...height=450]

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Kelsey Scherrer would test Lock Haven early with two shots on target in the first 10 minutes, but both were turned away as the game remained scoreless for the entire first half.

VCU would pick up the pressure in the second half with three penalty corners in the first 15 minutes, but again the Lady Eagles would deny each one and keep the game knotted up at 0-0.

Scherrer and the Rams would continue to the aggressor with multiple shots on goal, but each time Lock Haven's keeper Elaina White came up with the save as the game entered the final 15 minutes.

Lock Haven would regroup after a timeout and rattle off four straight penalty corners but junior Megan Botteri and the VCU defense was there to keep the game scoreless.

The Rams would strike gold in the 64th minute when Scherrer set up classmate Meaghan Neylon off another penalty corner. Neylon took Scherrer's pass on the left side of the circle and blasted it home for her fourth goal of the year.

VCU would control possession the rest of the way, preserving the 1-0 road victory.
