Time to get this thread started.

Per Rivals, the Owls have their first commit in the 2013 class - Andrew Drone, a 6-10 260lb Center from Gallatin County HS - Junction, Illinois.

And per - http://thesouthern.com/high-school/drone...963f4.html
Anyone a scout.com subscriber? They have an article on Drone committing to Rice. I use to subscribe, but having Rivals and Scout felt mostly redundant.

Scout has him at 6'11", 280 lbs. Glad we're getting a big man, but I was hoping Rice would get one late in the 2012 class. Losing Kazemi after this season will be tough.
Interesting story on Drone - his dad is deaf in both ears and he wants to major in Audiology at Rice. I'm not sure if such a major exists but he certainly can focus on some medically based course of study. Looking at his video - he does appear to be a bit of a project. But hopefully Omar Oraby will be able to help him out assuming Oraby sticks around for his senior year when Drone would be a freshman.

It's in the Linguistics major's "Speech Sciences" concentration.
I noticed we only have 10 players on the roster. Is Braun going to bring in some Jr College players or any tranfers?

Last week there were only 9 players on the roster. The addition is 6'8" 200 lb. junior Bahrom Firozgary. Looks like quite the academic achiever ... co-valedictorian, eagle scout, etc.

According to this he's been playing on Rice's club basketball team.
I'm glad to see we have one extra body at least. We still need more but that's a start. Is he Iranian (maybe Iranian-American)?

Very possibly. In 2011 he was a winner of a $3,000 scholarship competition open to Zoroastrians, the ancient religion of Persia.

From the Vakhshoori Foundation's website:

Quote:A word about our community: Zoroastrianism was the religion of ancient Persia, an empire encompassing modern-day Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Known by its practitioners as the “good religion,” it is based on the principals of “good thoughts,” “good words,” and “good deeds”. It is believed to be the first monotheistic religion, and it teaches that human behavior has clear consequences in the hereafter. The Arab conquest of Persia in the seventh century AD meant that Islam became the official religion of the land. Many Zoroastrians converted, some fled to India, and some fled to the countryside where they could continue to practice their faith. The number of Zoroastrians has dwindled considerably over time, and they are now scattered across the globe. Despite this Zoroastrians have thrived, and they have sought out higher education in disproportionately high numbers.

In 2007 the Vakhshoori Foundation created the Vakhshoori Scholarship (formerly Ahura scholarship) with an eye toward fostering the next generation of community leaders. Each spring the Ahura Scholarship is awarded to promising Zoroastrian students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the U.S. and abroad. A vital part of Zoroastrianism is the belief in free will, the idea that each individual shapes her or his own life. By funding young people’s education, the Vakhshoori Foundation helps them acquire the know-how necessary to act on their choices and make their dreams come true.

(We have some family friends who are Zoroastrian, who came to the U.S. from India.)
It can't be fun to be Braun right now...

Who's having the least fun right now--Braun, Bailiff, or Greenspan?

For that matter, out of that same trio, who's having the most fun right now?

From my admittedly limited exposure to RG's public persona, I get the feeling that he is incapable of being dissatisfied, so I believe he is "having the most fun" my default.

Ralph Sampson was (according to wiki) 7'4 228... I know he was skinny, but he wasn't frail... Manute Bohl was only 200 pounds, but at 7'7

if he can run and get in position, he should be okay
Worst possible case, he's better than an empty chair on the bench. When you've been decimated, any body is a good body.

One of my co-workers's husband is Zoroastrian from India. I believe many Zoroastrians moved to India when Islam came to Iran. My Bahai friends sometimes have Zoroastrian symbols ... they view all religions empathetically, but probably Zoroastrian more than most because they are both native Persian religions and both persecuted by the Islamic regime.

Rice could've been a very ecclesiastically diverse team with coaches who were Jewish and Copt, players who were Christian, Muslim, and Zoroastrian...

That's a typo. Franshaw is the spelling. He was 2010 grad from high school (should be a junior at Rice).

Franshaw was a spot substitute as a junior on a 37-1 team that went to state and featured 3 D1 seniors, including Stevie Rogers who committed to but never played for Rice (Rogers did a prep year at Choate and then went to Tx State when Braun gave his schollie to Trevan Abraham), and Tim Frazier, first team All Big 10 at Penn State.

I saw him play a lot in high school. I think he is a legit walk on and will help with practice, although he is almost three years from his last high school game (in which he matched up with UT's frosh Cameron Ridley, then a soph but already a 5 star)

He is very limited in terms of offensive skills.

Braun's feeling very good about the recruiting class which I believe can be announced tomorrow? I think he'll get a one year pass this year - and from what I'm hearing - it may not be quite as bad as some people are fearing. Here's a video of Bender making a 60 footer to win a game last year - hold your ears, it gets loud.
