It's kind of pathetic that we count a twitter follow as good news in recruiting.

my view is that our recruiting has been decent. Our retention is god awful.

Couldn't agree more

Who is counting a twitter follow as good news? I'm just sleuthing to see if there are players on the brink of receiving an offer and/or on the brink of committing. There have been a couple players in the past few years (Chad Lott and Miles Lester come to mind, but I think there have been others). To me it is just something fun to look at, not "good news."

Agree on retention. Hopefully Coach Pera is able to increase both recruiting and retention!
I will take every twitter follow we or the coaches get as good news. #IncreasingVisibility #RiceRising
New offer out to 2018 big man Austin Rotroff out of Ohio. 6-9 with offers from a boat load of mid majors.

Looks like he would be an excellent addition. Is a very good student and seems pretty solid all around. He might even stay four years!
Nice article today in the Chron on the transfer trend and it's impact on Rice...

I have seen nothing linking him to Rice, but 6'4" SG Tim Cameron (transferring from UTEP) still hasn't committed anywhere. He had a Rice offer in high school. He barely played for UTEP last year, but he was a 3-star recruit on most of the recruiting websites and had good offers.

Honestly, still plenty of uncommitted transfers floating around.

Any insiders know whether Rice is still looking at signing another player for 2017 (be it a freshman, an international player, or a transfer)? Or whether one of the walk-ons is being given a scholarship?

A nice 'Rice friendly' caption under the pic of Marcus Evans, softening the transfer by noting he was a Virginia native transferring to VA.
Guy who just announced he's transferring I could see us targeting is Greg Malinowski out of William & Mary. Averaged 7.7 a game in 21.7 minutes. 40% shooter from deep and a high academic who had offers from Ivies out of HS. Don't quite think he's good enough to be on power conference team's radars, but I could be wrong. Would have to sit a year, though.
Hope we are targeting a transfer or even Juco point guard who can play now. Only one scholarship point guard on the roster unless Lapray or Cashaw or someone else can play the point. Interesting that the article in the Chronicle said that Malik Osborne was the jewel of the class. He was a 2 star and Najjah was a 3 star. Seems I read somewhere that Malik has sprouted up in the last year or 2. Hope it continues like David Robinson did after he signed with Navy. Still think Pera has done a commendable job in the time he had. We definitely took 2 steps forward last season but maybe only one step back.

To quote myself:

If he grew an extra 3 inches since his senior season, that can obviously make a huge difference in recruiting. Looking even further back, he was only 5'8" his freshman year (according to his maxprep basketball roster) and 6'1" his junior year (according to his high school football roster). Growing 7 inches the past 2.5 years will do a lot for a player's recruiting prospects!
Offered 2019 G Julien Franklin today. Out of California with offers from Columbia and New Mexico.

Nothing says equal academics like Columbia and New Mexico....

Reminds me of taking the SHSU ladies to the national Sweet 16. Team areas are assigned alphabetically, so we were between Princeton and Stanford. Unfortunately, they were both better at rugby than we were, too.

That was probably the high water mark of my coaching career. Then again, as high water marks go, making it to the national Sweet 16 is probably not a bad one.
Looks like they put Miles Lester on scholarship. Hopefully they have an agreement to drop it after 1 year.

.@RiceBasketball has released guard Alec Spence (St. Louis, Missouri) from his National Letter of Intent.
Really hope we go after somebody else now. Hate to have multiple open scholarships*.

*Never mind since they put Lester on scholarship.
The bright side is we have two scholarship point guards now.

It's got to be tough for Pera to try to navigate the transition. There are bound to be some missteps (Braun and Rhoades certainly both had them). I still think we'll be okay. Not great but okay.
From looking at the tape, Lester looks like he's a better player than Spence. I'm not worried about losing this one. I hope we can sign another guy, but if not, then Pera still did a great job considering the circumstances.
