I heard CJJ on WNSP this morning (he was calling from Texas where he is recruiting JC's, btw) and Lee asked him if the new OC would come from outside, someone already on the staff or Joey himself. He said that it could be any of the three but he's in no hurry to fill the spot. With all the staff changes happening in college football, he's going to keep his eyes open for a quality individual looking for a job, but he may bring it back in house if he doesn't see someone he likes. he expects to name the OC in January.
I expect it to be CJJ himself with a GA they really like getting bumped up to QB coach.
BTW, I saw where on the old board CoachJMoody suggested a Ga Southern TE coach who used to a be a West Alabama QB. Two things: 1) I like Ga Southern's offense, but I think CJJ is looking for a concept that can throw as well as run. 2) An FCS position coach for our OC? C'mon, USA is beyond that level of hiring. We may not be able to get a high-level program position coach to come to USA but we surely could get FCS coordinators and non-AQ position coaches to take this job.
For some reason I am a little wary of head coaches taking over OC/DC positions. I don't know why but it just seems unconventional. Does Ol' Steve at South Carolina call his own offensive plays? I think I remember him doing that and if so that's an example of it working out, I reckon. Maybe I'm just being silly and it happens more often than I am aware.

There are still a few coaches that call there own plays. Paul Johnson at GT is the OC and calls plays. I think that Gundy, Dana H, and the ole' ball coach call there own plays, but I don't know if they have Oc's or not.
@AJ, I am not crazy about runnning a GaSo style TO, and I hope we are able to hire at a higher level than an FCS position coach. However, I am not too crazy about CJJ being the OC and promoting a GA to QB coach to take up the slack.
Although isn't CJJ credited with creating some version of the spread offense? I think Tony Franklin stole CJJ's book and then began selling it out of his car

That's right, CJJ introduced the spread to Alabama when he brought it to Mountain Brook and pulled off that amazing turnaround.
I would like to point out that, based on what I was told, the GA in question has been very impressive and Joey thinks he will be a star in the coaching ranks. That's why he is looking for a place for him on staff. Again, this is just what I was told and it wasn't by anyone who is on the staff, so take it with a grain of salt.

I hope for the best with the GA. I think it is great that we have an up and coming talented coach. I know CJJ has the ability to run the O, but I hope we bring in a new OC. I will be interested who makes the short list, if there is one.
Am I losing my mind or didn't Brennan Sim return as a GA after his stint in the UFL?

I'm kind of in the same boat here. It almost feels like an NFL coach being the GM. I know it has worked. It just feels strange. But I do believe he'll make the right "hire" if need be.
If CJJ thinks a GA shows enough to become a full fledge coach...I'll go with CJJ. Until we mess up thoroughly, he has the right to do as he wants in the determination of what someone will offer the team in the way of coaching ability, and talent to work with our young men. So far his judgment has been excellent in that regard.

Definitely agree! But we might need an extra recruiter, if we can get one.
Whose to say that Brennan couldn't be our D. Craig (Who moved on from us to FSU). A young man who could make a good first impression on recruits; Then tie down the commitment.

If so, let's hope we could convince him to stay a little longer. The calls will start coming quicker with the move to FBS.
I found a coach who intrigues me as a possible OC candidate. Brian Scott has been the coordinator for Old Dominion since they restarted football and they have done really well. This past year, as they finally joined the CAA and advanced to the playoffs, they averaged 36.7 points and 439.1 yards per game. They run a version of the spread that passes and runs the ball well, averaging 270.9 in the air and 168.2 on the ground.
Scott was a QB and assistant coach at Maine, a school that has run the spread very well for years at the FCS level. He doesn't have much time spent in the deep south, having only a year at Tennessee-Martin on resume from SEC country. Nevertheless, he's a young guy (early 30's) and he's used to the challenges of a new program. And USA is a step up from ODU. He might get offered an FCS head coaching job if he stayed there, but if he succeeded at USA he could get a coordinator job in a power FBS conference or a head coaching job in a non-AQ league like the Sun Belt.

I'm also wondering about Georgia Southern's OC. Any idea if a move to South would be a $$$ move up? His credentials are impressive. Maybe a bit more run-oriented than some would prefer, but you're doing something right when you hang 21 points on Bama.

Al.com released an article where CJJ has finally interviewed one man for the job. He states he could have the position filled before Christmas. However, that of the three to four candidates he has in mind, he might take beyond that projected estimate.
I wonder if Chris Samuels would get some consideration.
I'm not certain about Chris, .....but he did one heck of a good job for Vigor.
