What is up with the construction on the archway crossing University from the new parking deck? That was just completed a few years ago.
Seems alot of new projects are completed and then only after a few years, barracades are back up, ugly fencing, etc are back up on the new project for repairs, again. I saw numerous dumpsters around the library with scrap material all over the place on the grounds. Checked out the new softball complex which looks very good. I know the students will be glad the parking is replaced and refinished around the buisness engineering complex.
I hate the eyesore of the construction, but good to see new growth!
That deck on university is being expanded, I understand.
Yes, that deck is having 2 levels added. Also, the library is getting refurbished.
Did a Starbucks ever open up in the library?

The parking deck next to the Rec Center/Denman Hall is having a similar addition. It seems like it was completed during Christmas Break or is in the final stages.

It was a really stupid move on the schools part to not have the deck larger from the get go. Parking is the one thing that there was never enough of in bham and never will be. The library upgrade is needed but the starbucks confuses me. Im not sure how we had the money to put a starbuls in there but we dont have money for the school to pay fpr paper to print out the class syallbus in most of my courses.

It may very well have been an issue of money. It could also have been an issue of let's get this open and build another deck as well so we don't have this taking forever with the students having no place to park.

Starbucks makes money. Your syllabus does not. Plus the professors most likely have a limit of how much money they are given to spend.

Starbucks may make money but it took away coputer room in the library and we already had a cooffee shop a block away. Im just echoing what teachers are saying. Whats funny is that my teachers in two totally different departments are saying the same things. Im not saying starbucks was a terrible idea but dont try to sell me on the fact that there is not enough money for paper, i dont believe it. Plus the classes are what makes the money, without the students there would be no need for the starbucks.

There was a big push by students to get the Starbucks added to the library.

As far as taking away computer room, the only space Starbucks took up was the old magazine lounge. There is a computer lab directly across from Starbucks and there is one in the HUC.

All my professors have printed their syllabi, so it might just be a money issue within that department.

That's not what I'm saying at all. There are many factors that go into why a professor does things a certain way. Now this is pure conjecture, but it is possible that professors are given a stipend to spend on classroom tools. When that money runs out, anything else they need to buy comes out of their own pocket. This is how it works for my wife who is a school teacher. It might very well be that the professors ran out of their stipends, not that the school itself has no money.

The other thing is that the professors may be starting to be encouraged to go paperless. When I began PT school none of my syllabi were printed, but were available online instead. This is part of the new "green movement." Saves trees when you don't print things off for several thousand students who may or may not ever look at them.
The new Starbucks in the Library, if run like every other coffee shop on the planet, will be a space leased by a tenant. They will pay rent to the university.
Every single one of my professors gave me a printed syllabus. I don't why you would think that the school had to pay a ton of money to put that Starbucks in the library. Even if they did, I'm sure they are making money from it.

There's your first mistake.

A privately owned Starbucks taking up the magazine nook is nothing to be upset about. UAB may have fronted the capital to renovate the space for Starbucks, but UAB will make serious cheese leasing that space... obviously the professors saying these things are not from the School of Business.

Secondly, two stories of parking deck construction is not cheap and does not pay for itself like leasing space does. With the addition of the softball facility, future sports facilities, new Alumni building, and increased enrollment, UAB has no choice but to expand parking immediately. Throw in the chance that an OCS is in the near future and you should be happy to see all the construction for parking.

Construction at UAB means good things for all of us.
Professors have egos... this is news to me.

I love the new parking and wish it was there when I was at school. When I finally found a spot, I would stay there all day and rollerblade to all my classes.

Are the decks open to the public after 5 pm for those attending the basketball games?
I know all undergraduates can park in the decks after 5, but I'm not sure about the public.
